California is full of wildlife, including snakes, squirrels, raccoons, skunks, opossums, and more. Wildlife removal is a complex field. I recommend professional Hollister wildlife control services if you want to solve a critter problem legally and correctly. For example, we specialize in animals in the attic, which have broken into the house and almost always have a nest of baby animals. It is necessary to perform correct preventative repairs to keep pest animals a out of your house for good. We perform full building inspection, do the the repairs and we also offer attic decontamination if necessary. Rats and mice love to live in attics, and can chew wires or leave droppings. Some Hollister animals frequently enter homes, and correct removal is not a simple task.

County Animal ServicesDOG or CAT: If you need assistance with a domestic animal, such as a dog or a cat, you need to call your local San Benito County Animal Control for assistance. If you have a wildlife problem, you can try calling the San Benito County animal control, and see what they have to say, but they will certainly not help you with a complex wildlife problem such as critters in your attic. They are a free government agency that helps with dog and cat issues only.

Hollister Wildlife Tip:
How to Stop Squirrels Damaging Trees
Squirrels are cuddly, furry creatures whose antics are greatly admired; they're great fun to watch, but the moment they start damaging trees and stripping off bark, they become a nuisance. During the hot summer months, they feed on the oozing sap that lies beneath the bark and that can be very detrimental to your trees.

The health of any tree resides in the bark- its removal makes it susceptible to pests and insects and vulnerable to changing climatic conditions. Rain water makes the tree wood soft and this makes it very attractive for ants and other insects to tunnel their way through. Sometimes, the damage is so extensive that the limbs start dying one by one. Fungi and pests begin attacking the tree and the tree starts rotting.

During very cold weather, squirrels have no access to food sources, and that's why they turn to trees to fortify themselves. The bark contains nutrients and sugars that the squirrels can feast on. Also, squirrels keep their teeth sharp by chewing on the outer coverings of acorns and nuts, but when the stores disappear, then they start using anything and everything- from wood to plastic. They find tree bark very convenient toothbrushes with which to trim their teeth.

So how do you prevent these little creatures from stripping the trees?

Wrapping chicken wire or hardware cloth around the trunk can keep squirrels out. Metal flashing placed up to a height of 5 ft. is also recommended. Some trees are affected to a greater extent than others and you need to take this into account while protecting them.

As squirrels detest the smell of spicy foods, spray the trunk liberally with any hot spice- chili powder or cayenne peppers may do the trick. Taste repellents, available in stores also work well. The spices don't harm the creatures but prevents them from adopting destructive tactics. Garlic mixed with vinegar is also a good repellent. Remember, though that you need to reapply the repellents after every rain.

Though trapping is a solution, it's purely a temporary fix as a whole lot of new pesky creatures will continue the work of stripping trees of their bark.

Providing alternative supplies on which squirrels can gorge is one way of keeping them away from trees. Ensure however that these feeders are well away from trees and keep the feeders fairly full always. A variety of nuts or a log made of compressed ground corn is appreciated by them.

As squirrels don't like damp, using water sprinklers on trees may keep them away. This is especially true during the summer months when they feast on tree sap.

Keep a watch on your trees and if you find that squirrels are damaging them, don't hesitate to call professional help. Tree specialists can help you deal with the squirrels and help rehabilitate your trees that suffered from squirrel teeth.
