California is full of wildlife, including snakes, squirrels, raccoons, skunks, opossums, and more. Wildlife removal is a complex field. I recommend professional Placerville wildlife control services if you want to solve a critter problem legally and correctly. For example, we specialize in animals in the attic, which have broken into the house and almost always have a nest of baby animals. It is necessary to perform correct preventative repairs to keep pest animals a out of your house for good. We perform full building inspection, do the the repairs and we also offer attic decontamination if necessary. Rats and mice love to live in attics, and can chew wires or leave droppings. Some Placerville animals frequently enter homes, and correct removal is not a simple task.

Placerville Wildlife Tip:
Copperhead snake information - Of all the pit vipers, the copperhead snake is known to have the least potent venom. It can certainly inject enough of the poison to kill a human; however, this is rarely the situation. Copperhead snakes will only strike people when they are surprised or threatened. Their intent is not to kill; therefore the bite contains only a small amount of venom. This would allow the snake to warn a predator without killing it, and would allow the serpent enough time to slither to safety. These snakes prefer to live in thick forests where they use the leaf cover along the ground as camouflage. They are identified by a striking splash of reddish color on their triangular heads, hence the name 'copperhead'. Unlike other pit vipers, the copperhead has a slender neck, making its head appear bulbous. Care should be taken when walking in regions where copperheads live. Hikers are of particular nuisance to the snakes, and many bites happen on accident when a person stumbles over a concealed reptile. Thankfully, deaths from copperhead bites are very uncommon for the reasons mentioned above.

Placerville, CA Animal Control News Clip:
The Virginia Opossum - The Virginia opossum is also usually referred to as the North American opossum and the tlacuache. It is a solitary nocturnal animal, which is commonly found in North America, and it is considered the largest opossum in the world. The animal is familiar with people of North America and it is often seen rummaging through garbage cans near town. The animal has also been found to be a victim of traffic accidents in North America.

The name Virginia opossum is said to have originated from opossum, which is an Algonquian word meaning white animal.

Description - The animals can vary in size and height. They usually measure between thirteen and thirty seven inches long, from their snout to their tail base. The tail is usually between 8.5 inches and 19 inches. Male opossums weigh between 1.7 pounds and 14 pounds. On the other hand, female opossums weigh between 11 ounces and 8.2 pounds. It should be noted that the Virginia opossums are known to be one of the most variably sized mammals in the world. This is especially true since the North American males weigh almost twenty times as much as the female ones from the tropics.

They have dull grayish brown coats, and their faces are usually white. Their tails are long and hairless, and are often used to grab into branches and carry objects. Their ears are also hairless, and their nose is long and flat. Opossums have been established to have fifty teeth and their rear limb thumbs have been seen to be clawless. Also interesting to note about these animals is that they have thirteen nipples, which are arranged in a circle of twelve, with the thirteenth nipple being in the middle. The brain of an opossum has been established to be five times smaller than that of a raccoon.

Tracks - Tracks of Virginia opossums typically show five finger-like toes in both he hind and fore prints. However, the hind trucks are usually distinctive because of the opposable thumb. Adult fore print tracks usually measure 1.78 inches long and two inches wide, while the hind print tracks measure 2 and a quarter inches wide and two and a half inches long.

The animals have claws on all their fingers, except for the two afore mentioned thumbs. Their claw marks show that the animals have a small hole beyond the tip of each finger.

Behavior - The Virginia opossum is known to react to threats by feigning death. They like to pretend to be dead or injured if they detect a threat. This pretense is meant to deceive that the animal is already dead. It should be noted that this behavior is involuntary and it only happens if the opossum is extremely scared. For threats that are not serious, the animal will respond ferociously, through screeching and showing teeth. However, in cases of extreme fear, the animal will enter a near coma stage, which has been seen to last up to four hours. During this stage, it lies on its side with its eyes and mouth open. The tongue is left hanging out and it usually produces a green fluid from its anus, whose odor is meant to repel predators.
