Florida is full of wildlife, including snakes, squirrels, raccoons, skunks, opossums, and more. Wildlife removal is a complex field. I recommend professional Winter Park wildlife control services if you want to solve a critter problem legally and correctly. For example, we specialize in animals in the attic, which have broken into the house and almost always have a nest of baby animals. It is necessary to perform correct preventative repairs to keep pest animals a out of your house for good. We perform full building inspection, do the the repairs and we also offer attic decontamination if necessary. Rats and mice love to live in attics, and can chew wires or leave droppings. Some Winter Park animals frequently enter homes, and correct removal is not a simple task.

County Animal ServicesDOG or CAT: If you need assistance with a domestic animal, such as a dog or a cat, you need to call your local Orange County Animal Control for assistance. They can help you out with issues such as stray dogs, stray cats, vaccinations, licenses, pet adoption, lost pets, and more. If you have a wildlife problem, you can try calling the Orange County animal control, and see what they have to say, but they will certainly not help you with a complex wildlife problem such as critters in your attic. They are a free government agency that helps with dog and cat issues only.

Winter Park Wildlife Tip:
BANDED WATER SNAKE

The Banded Water snake, or Nerodia Fasciata, is a species native to the southeastern United States. It is not venomous and is mostly aquatic.

It can measure between 20 and 60 inches in length, which is not really big for a snake, but can still be pretty scary if you run into one. It can be gray, green, red or brown and has circular bands or markings around its body, which sometimes fades as it gets older, and they have flat heads and heavy, thick bodies which can sometimes cause them to be confused with the very venomous Cottonmouth.

The Banded Water snake, as its name implies, likes to live in or near the water. It looks for marches, rivers, lakes and streams to hunt in and basks in the sun on the rocks near the water. That is why the humid, marshy lands of Florida, Louisiana and even Indiana are favorite habitats for these snakes. Georgia and the Carolinas are also home to some Banded Water snakes thanks to their great climate and abundant bodies of water.

Unlike most snakes, they are active during both day and night, loitering around the water surface in search for and easy prey of fish or small amphibians. They also eat small rodents, insects, crayfish and tadpoles. Banded Water snakes eat their prey live, some snakes have been seen waiting with their mouths open in the water, waiting for fish or small tadpoles to swim by, clamping them in their powerful jaws when they are with reach. They also actively hunt for their prey in the waterbed, turning rocks and looking in crevices for their prey.

They do not lay eggs, but rather give birth to live offspring around mid - summer. Their mating season is the spring, females reach sexual maturity at around three years of age, while males only take around two years to do so. Banded Water snakes are viviparous, which means that the eggs are incubated inside the female's body and she gives birth to live snakes. These are born about 8 inches long and are very bright in color.

At the moment of their birth, they are already quite independent, and will hunt and attack if needed, despite their very small size.

These snakes do not like confrontation, they will try to flee at the slightest sign of danger or threat and are quite shy, but if captured or cornered, they can release a very strong smelling musk that can cause irritation to the skin and eyes. Do not try to pick up a snake that feel threatened, even if it is not venomous, because it will strike and bite. Banded Water snakes are quite easy to spot at the water's edge, and some people try to take them home as pets, but water snake are quite aggressive and are best left alone in their natural habitat.
