Illinois is full of wildlife, including snakes, squirrels, raccoons, skunks, opossums, and more. Wildlife removal is a complex field. I recommend professional Bolingbrook wildlife control services if you want to solve a critter problem legally and correctly. For example, we specialize in animals in the attic, which have broken into the house and almost always have a nest of baby animals. It is necessary to perform correct preventative repairs to keep pest animals a out of your house for good. We perform full building inspection, do the the repairs and we also offer attic decontamination if necessary. Rats and mice love to live in attics, and can chew wires or leave droppings. Some Bolingbrook animals frequently enter homes, and correct removal is not a simple task.

Bolingbrook Wildlife Tip:
How To Get Opossums Out From Inside A Wall

One of the features that is seen in the majority of modern home construction is that there is a cavity within the wall itself which helps to keep the property warm and cozy. However, when it comes to pest animals, they can find their way into almost any nook or cranny, and it certainly is not unheard of for an opossum to find its way into a wall cavity. While some may be using the area for nesting and are able to move in and out, others will actually become stuck in the wall, and will need to be removed.

Identifying The Location Of The Opossum

The first step to removing an opossum in a wall is to identify whether or not it is stuck, and in most cases you will hear almost constant activity if it is stuck, with sound being more intermittent if it is living in the wall and has another way of getting in and out. With animals that are stuck, you will need to listen to try and hear where in the wall they are located, but if you are dealing with an opossum regularly going in and out, you will need to trap and remove after finding the entry point it is using to get in and out.

Getting Into The Wall Cavity

If the opossum is trapped in the cavity, then one of the first steps to take is to try and see if there is any way to get into the cavity without cutting through the drywall. Some walls may have a space that will allow you to reach into the cavity from the top, while other walls may have damage or holes, but if neither is available, then cutting your way in may be the only option. If this is the case, try to cut within arm's reach of the opossum's location, and make sure the hole is large enough to give you some space for movement.

Removing The Opossum

If the opossum is only recently trapped then you may find it will jump out of the hole, so be ready with a cage or sturdy box with a lid that you can place over the hole to catch the animal. However, it will often be scared to move, so while wearing very thick gloves and clothing, pick up the animal, holding it firmly, and place it into a cage. After ensuring that there are no other animals in the cavity, relocate or humanely euthanize the opossum.

What To Do If An Opossum Gets Inside Your House, Bathroom Or Kitchen

Finding a wild animal inside one of the rooms in your home can be a concern even if it is something small like a spider or a wasp, so it is natural to be quite scared if you find an opossum in your home. The first thing to try and remember if you can is that the opossum will often be just as scared as you are, and will be confused by the unexpected change in its surroundings. Here is how to deal with the situation if you find an opossum inside the living quarters of your home.

Should You Try And Catch The Opossum?

The answer here is that you should only try and catch the opossum as a last resort, as it will often respond aggressively despite the cute exterior. While it may try and use its self defense mechanism of fainting and playing dead which will allow you to remove the animal, you also run the risk of getting bitten or scratched by the animal, which will certainly require medical treatment.

Creating A Path To The Outdoors

The simplest way of getting the opossum out of the house is to give it a clear path from the room where it is trapped so that it can get back outdoors into surroundings that it will be more familiar with. Open the door or doors to create a path outside for the animal to follow. Try to keep this route as short as possible, as the longer it takes to get out then the higher the likelihood that it will cause more damage and require more cleaning or repairs.

Encouraging The Opossum Out Of The House

If the opossum isn't openly showing signs of starting to move towards the exit, then you might want to consider laying a trail of dog biscuits or other treats to try and tempt the opossum out. Alternatively, if the carrot approach isn't working, then trying to give the opossum a nudge with a broom or long handled mop can also get the animal moving out of your home.

Trapping And Removing The Opossum

In some cases the opossum will back into a corner and refuse to move, and the best solution in this case is to call a professional to grab the animal and remove it. If this is not an option, then find the thickest clothing and gloves that you can, along with a cage and try to move the opossum into the cage so it can be removed from the house. Be wary as it may try to attack, and this should certainly be a last resort.
