New York is full of wildlife, including snakes, squirrels, raccoons, skunks, opossums, and more. Wildlife removal is a complex field. I recommend professional Mount Vernon wildlife control services if you want to solve a critter problem legally and correctly. For example, we specialize in animals in the attic, which have broken into the house and almost always have a nest of baby animals. It is necessary to perform correct preventative repairs to keep pest animals a out of your house for good. We perform full building inspection, do the the repairs and we also offer attic decontamination if necessary. Rats and mice love to live in attics, and can chew wires or leave droppings. Some Mount Vernon animals frequently enter homes, and correct removal is not a simple task.

Mount Vernon Wildlife Tip:
All about an armadillo's shell

If you were to inquire people to explain an armadillo, the no doubt answer you'd find is that it is a protected rat. In spite of basic conviction, notwithstanding, it is neither a rat nor a marsupial. They have a place with the less regularly known request cingular relations Dasypodidae. Their nearest living connections are sloths plus insect-eating animals. It is their shell, called a carapace that authentically recognizes them from extra comparable animals. It is made of bone and has a tough tissue coating on the exterior, much like turtles and tortoises. This is the armadillo's primary defense against predators. While it does have teeth and large claws for its size, neither are meant for fighting. They must rely on their protective armor, or escape into their underground tunnels, which are always nearby.

This protective shell running along its back and the top of its head will protect it from predators, but it has a soft and vulnerable underbelly. Predators such as coyotes, bears, and mountain lions pose a serious threat to these creatures as there is only one species, the three-banded armadillo that is capable of rolling into a ball to protect its weak underbelly. Other species of armadillo have too many plates along their back curl their bodies to that degree.

When threatened an armadillo will freeze to see if the predator will ignore them. If not, they will leap into the air in an attempt to surprise their opponent. They will then flee to the nearest cover, preferably their burrow. While their armor is tough, it will not save them if they become trapped. Their shell is made up of about 2,000 tiny scales, or scutes, which are composed of the protein keratin. Their carapace is divided into two segments; the anterior scapular shield, which covers its forequarters, and the posterior scapular shield, which covers its hindquarters. In between these two segments are a series of bands that vary depending on the species of armadillo. These are thinner and more flexible, allowing for greater mobility. In most species of armadillo, the carapace is attached to the skin on all sides.

The exception to this rule is the three-banded armadillos. In their case, the carapace is not attached along its lateral sides. This is what allows it to tuck in and form a ball shape when threatened. All of the other species' carapaces do not allow for this much mobility, and they cannot completely cover their vulnerable underside.

While certainly not the most intimidating defense mechanism, the armadillo's carapace has certainly proven effective against the predators that would seek to make a meal out of these creatures.
