New York is full of wildlife, including snakes, squirrels, raccoons, skunks, opossums, and more. Wildlife removal is a complex field. I recommend professional Valley Stream wildlife control services if you want to solve a critter problem legally and correctly. For example, we specialize in animals in the attic, which have broken into the house and almost always have a nest of baby animals. It is necessary to perform correct preventative repairs to keep pest animals a out of your house for good. We perform full building inspection, do the the repairs and we also offer attic decontamination if necessary. Rats and mice love to live in attics, and can chew wires or leave droppings. Some Valley Stream animals frequently enter homes, and correct removal is not a simple task.

Valley Stream Wildlife Tip:
I Caught a Raccoon. Now What?

Maybe you had a raccoon that has been a nuisance around your house. Always getting into your garbage. Tearing apart your garden. Maybe even getting into your house.

While you clearly didn't want the animal around, you may very well have not wanted to die either. You simply wanted the thing off your property, so you set up a trap. You put out the perfect bait. You waited overnight and, when you got up in the morning time, success! Your raccoon was caught. Now the question is, what do you do with it?

Caution First

You did great on capturing this raccoon, but before taking any action a few safety thoughts first. First off, consider that raccoons are the carriers of a number of diseases. This includes rabies! The last thing you want is to be scratched or bitten by one of these animals. That could be a serious problem for you or any member of your family.

Plus, you also have to worry about the fact that their feces and urine are dangerous to you as well. Parasites and bacteria can become airborne as they dry. You breathe this in or get it on your skin, and you could have a serious health problem as well. Thus, you have to be extremely careful when handling the animal, even if it is simply by holding the cage.

You want to make sure that you fully protect yourself. This means wearing heavy duty gloves, long pants, a long-sleeved shirt, safety goggles, and surgical mask to protect your respiratory system. You should also wear boots. Let no illness or raccoon because you serious injury.

Figure Out a Plan

Before moving the animal at all, you need to figure out a plan of exactly what you'll do with it. One of the most sensible things to do would be to contact your local animal control agency. It is likely that they will not provide any service to you, but they may at least be willing to take the animal from you if you bring it to them. They may also have suggestions of places to take the raccoon.

Catch and Release

If you are able to take the raccoon to a preserve or other similar location, this should be your first stop. Make sure that you use a vehicle that gives plenty of room to slide the trap inside your car or truck. It is probably a good idea to line the seats or the back of your truck with a tarp. That will make cleaning a whole lot easier. Also, cover the cage. Make sure that no fluid of the animal gets out.

If you are unable to take the animal to a wildlife preserve, then your next spot is to take it to a forest area. Open the cage and let the animal get out on its own. You will need to do this in the evening time, as it is getting dark. The animal may not leave the cage or will be in jeopardy if you do it in the daytime. These little steps should help you to protect yourself and safely return the raccoon back to the wild.
