Virginia is full of wildlife, including snakes, squirrels, raccoons, skunks, opossums, and more. Wildlife removal is a complex field. I recommend professional Ashburn wildlife control services if you want to solve a critter problem legally and correctly. For example, we specialize in animals in the attic, which have broken into the house and almost always have a nest of baby animals. It is necessary to perform correct preventative repairs to keep pest animals a out of your house for good. We perform full building inspection, do the the repairs and we also offer attic decontamination if necessary. Rats and mice love to live in attics, and can chew wires or leave droppings. Some Ashburn animals frequently enter homes, and correct removal is not a simple task.

Ashburn Wildlife Tip:
How to Make a Skunk-Proof Fence or Barrier

Skunks are mammals that belong to the Mephitidae family. While their black and white coloring does make it easy to recognize them, it's their smell that often make animals and people keep their distance. There are about 10 species of skunks- most, or all of them can be found in Central and North America.

Skunks are rabies carriers and a normal den consists of 8 or 9 of these smelly creatures, so you definitely don't want to have anything to do with them. Skunks, however, love to make their homes under sheds, decks, porches or patios. If one of the den happens to die, you have a 'stinking mess' to deal with. It's impossible to stay around, so the best thing is to ensure that one doesn't enter your home at all.

Raccoons and possums can climb tall fences but skunks cannot, so you would think that a huge fence around the house should keep them out. Think again! They may be poor climbers but they're excellent diggers and have been known to construct burrows to create cozy homes- all lined with leaves, roots and branches.

Netting may protect your vegetable garden from skunk attack but what about the other hide-holes beneath your deck or shed? Well, L-shaped barriers seem to be effective- Bury boards, metal flashing or 1/2" galvanized hardware cloth can be used. The material needs to be buried at least 4-6 inches underground. By bending one foot of the material outward in the form of an L, a false bottom is created. Use fasteners to keep the structure steady and in place. Cover the protruding material with soil and ground cover- this will prevent skunks and other small mammals from digging under the barrier that has been created. Don't settle for less expensive material- good hardware cloth bury should last a decade at least.

Seal vent openings and holes under porches or patios either with robust and sturdy wire mesh or the same hardware cloth bury. Weep holes in brick and stone houses offer free entry to a number of animals and pests but are needed to allow incoming water to make its way out. So close the holes with a good barrier that allow for the flow of water but keeps pests and rodents at bay. Similarly, in order to ensure that skunks don't dig under a concrete slab or building or don't enter chicken and hen coops, erect suitable barriers.

If you're not too keen on burying the bent edge of the hardware cloth or other material that you use, don't bury the bent edge- just angle some patio blocks and place them on it. The slope will ensure that there is no water build up as it will flow away from the blocks. Light up vulnerable areas as skunks generally don't like bright light.

It's important to ensure that no animals are trapped within the barrier, so to play it safe, just install a one-way door somewhere along the line of the barrier. Animals that are trapped can escape but can't make a re-entry.

Keep those skunks and their smells at more than arm's length!
