Thousands of Mexican free-tail bats taking off from their roost is said to be an impressive sight. Depending on the size of the roost it can take a single colony many hours to leave their home, and take off into the night in seach for food. Prior to taking off they are said to form single-file lines (as shown) so that they can all take off in an orderly fashion; it is also due to the fact that the “breeze” produced by each bat taking off, can serve as a slip stream for the next bat in line. The next bat is able to ride this slip stream, giving him the ability to take flight with little effort on his part.

Once in the air, Mexican free-tail bats are efficient travelers. Their bodies are literally built for long-distance travel – they are the original “rapid transit.” As the fastest species of bat in the world, the Mexican free-tail bat can travel up to 60 miles in any direction away from its roost in order to find food. It is not unusual for this little creature to travel in excess of 25 miles per hour (although 40 and 60+ miles per hour have been observed under the right conditions). Their tiny body and even short fir seems to contribute to their streamline and ability to reach top speeds. Their wings are surely built for speed in that they are comprised of a thin mass of bones and “fingers” covered in a thin membrane of tissue. This construction is extremely fragile. This is why a bat should never be handled by human hands. Even the slightest deviation from gentility can cause the bat great injury.

In every case, it is best to leave the bat alone and enjoy observing their beautiful and unique flight pattern from a distance.

Bats are great animals! Unfortunately, the do often choose to roost inside home and buildings, where they can create a big mess. It's a good idea to remove the bats from your belfry or attic, but it's also a great idea to avoid harming them! Any competent wildlife control expert should have the knowledge and expertise to safely and effectively remove an entire colony of bats from a house without harming or killing a single one. I know that I have a 100% success rate with bat removal jobs, and I believe the list of companies that I've compiled in my directory is of similar quality. If you want to learn more, please read my How To Get Rid of Bats page.
