A Bat Colony in the Attic - Bats enjoy roosting in dry and dark spaces, such as caves. However, attics will meet all of their standards and allow them to live and reproduce. When someone has bats in their attic, they need to remove them as soon as possible. Sometimes, a homeowner is unaware that they have bats until they become a large colony.

A colony of bats usually consists primarily of female bats. This is often referred to as a maternity colony. Bats are able to live for a very long time and will often remain in the same place throughout the year, if the weather allows. However, if the conditions do not permit them to stay all year they will leave and return each summer.

Bats are nocturnal so they become more active at dusk. Bats are often difficult to notice when there are only a few. They are quiet in small quantities which cause most people to not notice them. However, when they become a large colony, they are difficult to ignore. The best chance for a homeowner to hear them is during dusk. This is usually when the bats will line up to fly out of the attic in search for food.

Bats let homeowners know that they are there by their droppings. Their droppings omit a foul odor that is hard to miss. Their droppings can accumulate in large quantities. Not only is the smell difficult to get rid of, they can cause lung disease for the human residents in the house.

You need to determine how the bats are getting in and out of your attic. Usually, they will enter through a small gap near the roof. If the opening is large enough you can install a one way device to allow the bats to safely fly out, but not back in. Once all of the bats have exited the attic, you will need to permanently seal up any openings.

Bats are great animals! Unfortunately, the do often choose to roost inside home and buildings, where they can create a big mess. It's a good idea to remove the bats from your belfry or attic, but it's also a great idea to avoid harming them! Any competent wildlife control expert should have the knowledge and expertise to safely and effectively remove an entire colony of bats from a house without harming or killing a single one.
