Spike Strips to Deter Pigeons

Roosting pigeons can be annoying to many property owners. They carry mites, fleas, ticks and even diseases. Pigeons can also cause a lot of damage to the side of your building, or any cars or statues that are located under them while they are perching.

If you find that you have pigeons living of the ledges of your building, you may want to install plastic spike strips. These spike strips are easy to install. They are also flexible, which allows you to easily mount them almost anywhere. You are able to affix these spike strips by using zip ties or glue adhesive.

The goal of these strips is to prevent pigeons from landing or roosting. This makes it very uncomfortable for pigeons, and they will find somewhere else to land. One of the biggest benefits of the plastic spike strips are that they do not damage your building, and can be easily removed at a later time.

Most of the time, you are able to place the strips in a location that is hidden. If you are not and would prefer to not have theses strips visible, there are other humane methods that you can try. Most pigeons will land on flat surfaces. If you are able, you can manipulate these surfaces to create a slope. This will make it difficult for pigeons to perch. Not only should you be reviewing your ledges, you should also review the light fixtures, eaves and roofs.

Placing a decoy in the area may help scare pigeons into a new location. Pigeons are smarter than people give them credit for and will eventually determine that the decoy is not a real predator. The best decoys are ones that move and make sound. If you do not have access to this type of decoy, make sure that you are moving it every few days.

The most commonly dealt with bird problem in the US is that of pigeons roosting on buildings. Feral pigeons tend to live in urban areas, and they prefer to roost on and in buildings, where they leave nesting material, feathers, parasites, and worst of all, their unsanitary and corrosive droppings. The only way to permanently solve such problems is to install bird exclusion materials, such as bird spikes or netting. Bird trapping is also an option, but it's usually a poor and temporary fix. In addition to pigeons, other birds can cause problems in certain other situations: woodpeckers damaging houses, sparrows stuck inside retail spaces, Chimney Swifts nesting inside chimneys, etc. If you want to learn more, please read my How To Get Rid of Birds page.
