Rats run along pipes, wires, and ducts.

Customer Rat Email: Hi, I have physically seen, a Live Rat's Butt, going into the Attic, of a home I am Purchasing. This home was built 17 yrs ago, and has been vacant for over 2 years. Its roughly 2,000sq', with a Basement, equal to the Perimeter size of the home. I am a G.C., and I am looking for a price estimate to Rid this house of Rats and ANY- In-Wall, Issues. When you go downstairs, to the Basement, there is the Smell of something DEAD, or Many things dead, behind the walls (Basically underneath the stairs). I can handle sealing the walls and exterior, I just need a professional to access the "Smell" that's a TOTALLY different smell from the first floor, to the Basement! I know at least one point of entry for the Rats is at the exterior Electrical Gang Box, that has a Pop-Out framed Cover of the Electrical PVC, from the Ground to the Attic, and it is NOT Sealed. Basically, I'm going to need NOT just the Attic abated for Rats, but the Basement also. I can handle the Removal of Drywall, to expose whatever walls you may need, in the Basement, We just need to know the extent of the Damage. Can you give me an estimate or price per square foot, you roughly Charge for this kind of thing? Thanks, Janie

My Answer: The only way to do an accurate estimate for rat control in any home or building is to do an on-site estimate, because every building has different repair needs.

There are three kinds of rodents commonly found inside buildings (in the attics, walls, and even inside the living space). They are the Roof Rat (Rattus rattus), which is also called the Black Rat, then there's the Norway Rat (Rattus norvegicus), also known as the Brown Rat, and the House Mouse (Mus musculus). Roof Rats are more common in the south, such as Florida, where I work. The above photo is of a Roof Rat. They are very common inside attics. The Norway Rat is more common in the northern section of the United States. The Norways are more commonly found underground, in subways and sewers and such. The House Mouse is found everywhere, but seems more common in the north. All of these rodents thrive in urban areas and love to live in human buildings and houses. They use human garbage (and pantries) as sources of food. All of these rodents are carriers of several diseases that can infect humans and pets. They contaminate homes and attics. The only way to permanently solve a rat problem is to find out how the rodents are gaining access to the inside of the building, and fix those openings. Then the remaining rats inside have to be trapped and removed. If you want to learn more, please read my How To Get Rid of Rats page.
