A Black Racer snake is a nonvenomous snake that is incredibly curious and has excellent vision. Black Racers are slender and solid black in color. They generally have scales that are smooth and large eyes. While they are usually solid black in color, they generally have white coloration under their chin. Young black racers do not resemble the adults. They are usually tan or grayish in color. They will not become solid black until they are fully matured. It will usually take up to two years for these snakes to reach their full maturity levels.

Racers are known to be the fastest snake. They will also rattle their tails that makes a sound similar to that of a rattlesnake. Black Racer snakes do not constrict their prey, but rather swallow them in whole, alive. Their diet consists mainly of small rodents, toads, frogs, lizards, and other snakes. These reptiles will not hesitate to bite and will also omit a foul smelling odor as a defense mechanism. If handled, they will also tend to writhe around and defecate.

These snakes are usually very active during the day and especially in warmer weather. At night, or when the weather is cooler, they will generally burrow or take cover underneath of boards or objects. Racers will usually mate during the springtime and lay up to 36 eggs in the early summer. These eggs will then hatch in the late summer season or the early fall season.

There are numerous people that believe because they were able to catch a Black Racer snake that they are able to keep them as a pet. This type of reptile does not make a good house pet as their personalities vary and will usually attack when approached, even to hold. Usually, a Black Racer will not eat when it is kept in captivity.

Running a wildlife removal business in the state of Florida gives me the chance to see all kinds of interesting snakes! Florida has about 45 species of snake, and I've seen 29 of them so far. I've always got my eye out for new species, and I love spotting rare snakes in Florida. I also have a thing for venomous snakes - they're not too common in FL, so I always enjoy the chance to see a poisonous serpent. I really like snakes, and I've never hurt or killed one. They're an important part of the ecosystem, and often persecuted. Still, if you don't want snakes in your house or on your property, and judging from the number of phone calls I receive regarding snake problems, you don't, then give me or a local snake expert in your area a call, and we can remove the snakes from your property for you. I use many snake control methods - from snake traps, to snake repellents, to habitat modification, but most of all, good old-fashioned capture and removal. If you want to learn more, please read my How To Get Rid of Snakes page.
