Do Bats Avoid Light?

Bats: the name itself can easily conjure up images of winged, rat-like creatures turning into vampires in a horror movie. However, mostly due to their portrayal in media, bats are one of the most misunderstood nocturnal creatures. Classified into the Chiropteran family, they look like rats, but have their signature webbed limbs which help them to fly- even allowing them to be one of the only mammals that can both fly, and go for both long and short distances.

Despite the common-used phrase 'blind as a bat', bats are, in fact, not blind at all, instead often possessing a highly accurate vision. However, bats often avoid both natural and artificial lights, for a variety of reasons. Mostly, this is due to being a primarily nocturnal animal and, therefore, being able to adapt their sight to extremely low light conditions. When bats are flying at night, they are highly aware of the artificial lights around them, and will actively avoid them as much as they can. In addition, they will often also avoid pitching their roosts, or nesting in areas that might be within the direct path of shining lights.

In addition to this, scientists studying the habits of bats have found that they will often do whatever it takes to avoid light when foraging at nights: even when this means finding less food, or being briefly exposed to more predators. When bats come out, rarely, during the daytime, or fly close to artificial lights at night, they are temporarily blinded, making it easier for predators to take advantage of their blindness and pick them off. This could, in fact, be one of the main reasons why bats are nocturnal, as well, since they would be able to 'see' predators through sonar much easier during the nighttime.

The avoidance of light can also have consequences on a bat's available food, as well; when scientists began tracking the routes that a group of bats commonly took, and turned lights on strategically along those routes, they noticed that bats mostly avoided the areas that were lit completely. This means that bats could often end up in areas where food is scarcer, which could, in turn, lead to issues with a large bat population finding an adequate supply of food. This route can also end up providing less shelter, giving the bats a greater risk of attack by one of their many natural predators- including other winged birds that can see during both the day and nighttime, such as hawks and falcons.

While yes, bats theoretically can see during the daytime, they are not meant to be a light-dwelling animal. Their sensitivity to the sunlight, as well as their bad vision during that time, can lead to many issues, including making them more prone to attacks from predators that they are unable to see.
