Massachusetts is full of wildlife, including snakes, squirrels, raccoons, skunks, opossums, and more. Wildlife removal is a complex field. I recommend professional Leominster & Fitchburg wildlife control services if you want to solve a critter problem legally and correctly. For example, we specialize in animals in the attic, which have broken into the house and almost always have a nest of baby animals. It is necessary to perform correct preventative repairs to keep pest animals a out of your house for good. We perform full building inspection, do the the repairs and we also offer attic decontamination if necessary. Rats and mice love to live in attics, and can chew wires or leave droppings. Some Leominster & Fitchburg animals frequently enter homes, and correct removal is not a simple task.

Leominster & Fitchburg Wildlife Tip:
Biology Of The Black Rat

The black rat is one of the most common pest animals to be found around the world, and because of its ability to climb, and the fact that it spread around the world, it is often referred to as the roof rat or the ship rat. The species can adapt to a wide range of different conditions, which has helped it survive in almost every part of the world, having spread from its original home in tropical Asia. Today the black rat is considered to be a significant pest in many areas, and is also a threat to other wildlife in places where it is an invasive species.

Body And Tail

The black rat is smaller than the brown rat, with the animal's body usually measuring between five and seven inches in length, with the animal's tail often longer than the body, at a maximum of four inches in length. Although it is known as the black rat, the animal's body is covered in fur which can vary from black to light brown, and depending on the surroundings the rat can grow to between four and twelve ounces in weight.

Nest And Habitat

Although rats are found in many different areas of the world, the species is most successful in warmer areas of the world, and is often in competition for food and nesting spots with the brown rat, which is often larger and more aggressive than the black rat. Black rats can be quite flexible in terms of their nesting sites, often choosing areas above ground levels such as in trees, and also in attics and barn lofts where they can be a significant pest.

Reproduction

Black rats can become sexually active at between three and five months of age, and while they can reproduce throughout the year this urge is most common during the spring and summer months. Gestation is around three weeks in length, and the female will then give birth to a litter of around six babies. Few black rats will live beyond a year old in the wild.

Disease And Population

One of the biggest problems of having populations of black rats living alongside people is that due to their resilient biology, they can carry a range of different diseases, including the bubonic plague. The population of black rats has been dropping in many areas, including the United States and Western Europe, as the change in house building methods and food storage has made the black rat less successful than the brown rat.

About Opossums

The opossum is one of the quirkiest and most numerous pest species to be found in the United States and Canada, and while it may look very cute it can actually be a significant pest if it isn't dealt with appropriately. Opossums are marsupials, and like kangaroos and koala bears, they actually carry their young in a pouch during the early weeks after birth. They also have one of the most interesting self defense mechanisms in nature, which is a genuinely different approach to avoid being killed by predators.

Appearance

The opossum is a fairly large animal that is around the size of a large house cat, and usually has a white furry face with a pink nose and dark eyes. The rest of the body is covered in a gray fur, with darker fur covering the legs, with five pink toes on each foot. The opossum also has a fairly long tail around the same length as its body.

Biology

The reproductive process for the opossum is actually quite unusual, as the babies gestate for up to two weeks, but then spend between ten weeks and eighteen weeks before they are fully weaned and leave the pouch. Opossums are also remarkably resilient to poison, diseases and other conditions because of their lower body temperatures, which is not hospitable to most bacteria.

Life Cycle

While the opossum does take up to eighteen weeks to leave its mother, the lifespan is relatively short, with few opossums living beyond four years old. The majority of baby opossums will only live for a short time, as there are relatively large numbers of babies born, with up to thirteen able to attach to a teat, with the remainder of the litter dying shortly after birth.

Habitat And Diet

Opossums do not naturally travel very far, and usually prefer to stay in the same area where possible. They are found in Central America, Mexico and many parts of the United States, and generally live where there is plenty of food, with fruit, meat and anything that they can scavenge from human garbage among the opossum's diet.

Behavior

The most curious part of the animal's behavior is their tendency to 'play possum', when they are under threat, and what this means is that they play dead so effectively that they lose consciousness, foam at the mouth and the body becomes stiff, with the animals usually regaining consciousness a few hours later if they are unharmed.
