Maryland is full of wildlife, including snakes, squirrels, raccoons, skunks, opossums, and more. Wildlife removal is a complex field. I recommend professional Owings Mills wildlife control services if you want to solve a critter problem legally and correctly. For example, we specialize in animals in the attic, which have broken into the house and almost always have a nest of baby animals. It is necessary to perform correct preventative repairs to keep pest animals a out of your house for good. We perform full building inspection, do the the repairs and we also offer attic decontamination if necessary. Rats and mice love to live in attics, and can chew wires or leave droppings. Some Owings Mills animals frequently enter homes, and correct removal is not a simple task.

Owings Mills Wildlife Tip:
What diseases do groundhogs carry?

Groundhogs are smallish rodents native to the Eastern and Central United States, Canada and Alaska. They are often called woodchucks and live in close proximity to people. Often rodents found in and around the homes of people carry a multitude of diseases. Groundhogs carry few diseases in comparison with other critters.

Diseases that they carry

Rabies. Even though it is very rarely the case, rabies is the most common disease carried by groundhogs. If you come into contact with a groundhog that seems to be presenting with symptoms of rabies phone your nearest animal control office immediately. Rabies can be transmitted to people through scratches and bites. If you are scratched or bitten by any wild animal it is smart to go to a doctor. They will administer a rabies shot. Rather be safe than sorry.

Hepatitis. It is impossible to determine whether a groundhog is a carrier of the infection. You will have to be regularly tested to make sure that you have not contracted it.

Fleas. Although not very common, fleas can spread the bubonic plague to people.

Ticks. Groundhogs carry ticks that can transmit diseases to humans and other animals.

Powassan disease is transmitted by ticks. It is very rare, and only a few cases a year are reported. However, the infected person will have to be hospitalized in order to be monitored as there is no specific cure. The symptoms include seizures, headaches, memory loss, fever, nausea and confusion.

Tularemia. This is another disease that can be transmitted through ticks. You can also contract it by coming into contact with the flesh of infected animals. The symptoms include skin ulcers, irritated eyes and swelling of glands, sore throat, mouth ulcer and swelling of lymph glands.

How to spot a sick groundhog

Sick groundhogs will present with the following symptoms: Foaming at the mouth, partial paralysis, inflamed cut, and aggression.

Who to contact

If you spot a sick groundhog, you can call animal services. They will only assist if the groundhog is posing a threat to the health and safety of people in the community. If you come across a groundhog that is injured your best bet would be to contact an independent wildlife organization. They will be better equipped and more willing to assist you.
