North Carolina is full of wildlife, including snakes, squirrels, raccoons, skunks, opossums, and more. Wildlife removal is a complex field. I recommend professional Pinehurst wildlife control services if you want to solve a critter problem legally and correctly. For example, we specialize in animals in the attic, which have broken into the house and almost always have a nest of baby animals. It is necessary to perform correct preventative repairs to keep pest animals a out of your house for good. We perform full building inspection, do the the repairs and we also offer attic decontamination if necessary. Rats and mice love to live in attics, and can chew wires or leave droppings. Some Pinehurst animals frequently enter homes, and correct removal is not a simple task.

Pinehurst Wildlife Tip:
What Do I Do with a Squirrel Once I Have Caught It?

So, you finally defeated that pesky squirrel. It has been continually coming around your property to the point where you just had enough. You decided that you would set out a trap, put out the right bait, and it would fall for it all. You have been quite successful, and now the squirrel is caught. Now you are wondering, what do I do with it?

You Can't Just Let It Go

The reality is that you just can't let it go. While it may be startled, even deathly afraid of being captured in the trap, it is going to come back. Letting it go means you really shouldn't have captured in the first place.

You Could Kill It

You could kill the squirrel. You could just put some poison in the cage or use some kind of mechanical device to terminate the life of a squirrel. However, it is likely that you didn't want the animal to be injured at all. This is why you used to trap in the first place. You could've just done this without using a trap, so killing it is really not an option.

You Could Relocate It

This is an option as well. You could find a location where the squirrel could thrive and then transported there. There are likely many locations within 20 or 30 miles of you where squirrels are already prospering. You could drive it out there, open the cage and let it go. If there are trees and nuts, there are many places for it to live and find food. It could even likely find a mate there. Sounds like a perfect idea.

The problem is you have to be real careful about transporting a squirrel. These animals are the carriers of a number of diseases, any one of which could get on you by coming in close proximity to the squirrel. You don't want to put yourself at risk simply because you wanted to do the humane thing.

So, if you decide to move it, then make sure you protect yourself. Cover all exposed skin with clothing, where boots and gloves, and where a surgical mask and goggles. You should cover the cage so that fluids don't get on you. This should also help to settle down the squirrel some. Also, use flatbed truck to transport the animal and put a tarp inside before setting the cage and there. Transporting an animal like this in your car as far too dangerous, because all it takes is for some of that fluid get on your seat and you could contaminate your entire vehicle.

These are some of the suggestions you could use. There are others out there, but these are likely the three most common ones that people use once they have captured a squirrel. No matter what option you choose, be safe. Make sure that you are protecting yourself and your family. You simply can't take a risk like this with an animal that poses a health risk to you.
