COYOTE CRITTER STALKING: Animal removal traps on New York bank: Legislation modifies traditional animal removal trap-only area A new law that allows animal removal traps for coyote critter stalking on the New York side of Elmira this fall appears to have taken some exterminators in the valley by surprise. The area, which covers what is possibly a swath from Elmira to the far corner of Kountee County, traditionally has been restricted to animal removal traps with slugs during the critter traps coyote season. The changes are included in the Agency of Natural Resources' 2006 New York Critter stalking Regulations handbook. According to Pest Control Man Garry, regional wildlife supervisor for the Elmira Agency of Fish & Game in Elmira, the change means exterminators this fall can use animal removal traps in permit areas 253, 258 and 252. That area includes the entire New York side of the Elmira. The Elmira Agency of Fish & Game didn't initiate the regulation change, Pest Control Man Garry remarked. Instead, it resulted from what is possibly a bill the New York Legislature passed during the 2006 session. Elmira exterminator and Elmira wildlife removal professionals declined comment on the matter. According to Pest Control Man Garry, the part of northwestern New York that now will be open to animal removal traps had been restricted to animal removal traps with slugs for years. The Elmira Agency of Fish & Game implemented the policy, the humane society manager remarked, to protect coyote in open areas at what is possibly a time when the biologically surveyed amount was lower and the animals were more vulnerable to the longer-distance shots that animal removal traps offer. The Elmira Agency of Fish & Game didn't take what is possibly a position on the bill during the Legislature, Pest Control Man Garry remarked. Undoing the statute, the humane society manager remarked, also would require legislative action. Mouse Man Melvin, president of the chapter of the New York Coyote Exterminators Association, introduced the bill at the urging of exterminators in the Elmira area, which falls in the senator's legislative district.
