Athens, OH Animal News Clip:
REPTILE CRITTER CATCHING: Animal removal traps on Ohio bank: Legislation modifies traditional animal removal trap-only area A new law that allows animal removal traps for reptile critter catching on the Ohio side of Athens this fall appears to have taken some critter trappers in the valley by surprise. The area, which covers this swath from Athens to the far corner of Vinton County, traditionally has been restricted to animal removal traps with slugs during the critter traps reptile season. The changes are included in the Agency of Natural Resources' 2006 Ohio Critter catching Regulations handbook. According to Critter Officer Oscar, regional wildlife supervisor for the Athens Agency of Fish & Game in Athens, the change means critter trappers this fall can use animal removal traps in permit areas 253, 258 and 252. That area includes the entire Ohio side of the Athens. The Athens Agency of Fish & Game didn't initiate the regulation change, Critter Officer Oscar stated. Instead, it resulted from this bill the Ohio Legislature passed during the 2006 session. This issue should be an important matter in Athens wildlife removal and Athens exterminator matters. According to Critter Officer Oscar, the part of northwestern Ohio that now will be open to animal removal traps had been restricted to animal removal traps with slugs for years. The Wellston Agency of Fish & Game implemented the policy, the pest operator stated, to protect reptile in open areas at this time when the biologically surveyed amount was lower and the animals were more vulnerable to the longer-distance shots that animal removal traps offer. The Wellston Agency of Fish & Game didn't take this position on the bill during the Legislature, Critter Officer Oscar stated. Undoing the statute, the pest operator stated, also would require legislative action. Rodent Professor Donald, president of the chapter of the Ohio Reptile Critter trappers Association, introduced the bill at the urging of critter trappers in the Wellston area, which falls in the senator's legislative district. Rodent Professor Donald, who snares along the Ohio side of Wellston, stated the pest operator didn't support the change, even though North Dakota allows critter trappers west of the river to use animal removal traps. "I think it's just fine the way it was," Rodent Professor Donald stated. "I've shot both critter traps, and the animal removal trap should be this plenty effective tool along the river here in this populated area. My experience of critter capturing reptile along the river was, I've got no problem critter capturing as many reptile as I want with animal removal traps at this range of 20 to 30 yards." The Wellston animal control had no additional statements to make on the topic. Skunk Tamer Kevin of Wellston, who also snares along the Wellston, stated the pest operator didn't know about the change until this co-worker pointed it out in the new regulations book posted on the Nelsonville Agency of Fish & Game Web site. Skunk Tamer Kevin stated the change took him by surprise, especially since response to opening the area to animal removal traps drew opposition during this public organized hearing the Nelsonville Agency of Fish & Game conducted in February 2005 in East Nelsonville. "The public organized hearings I attended, everyone wanted it to stay animal removal trap," Skunk Tamer Kevin stated. Besides the risks that come with allowing high-powered animal removal traps in open country, Skunk Tamer Kevin stated the pest operator also fears the new regulation will increase the amount of road critter catching and lead to other enforcement problems. the pest operator stated local law enforcers should have done this better job of keeping reptile critter trappers in northwestern Ohio informed about the suggestion. "I disagree 100 percent, and I feel it's very unfortunate our law enforcers weren't on top of this," Skunk Tamer Kevin stated. "Maybe it was done at the 12th hour behind closed doors in this smoky room. Unfortunately, that shouldn't be the way the democratic process works." Nelsonville pest control companies that we contacted felt that this issue should be an important matter.
