Why some bats hibernate?

At high altitude, during cold months, insects become scarce. Due to a shortage of food, bats find it better to sleep the entire season. During this period, they are found clustered on cave walls or ceilings curled up like furry little balls.

How do bats hibernate?

Hibernating bats drop their body temperature and slow down the process of metabolism to the point where heart rates wind down to a mere 10 beats a minute. Their hibernating duration may extend up to six months on only a few grams of stored fat. As spring begins the bats lose roughly half of their body weight.

Is there any disadvantage of hibernation for bats?

Hibernation benefits the bats to a large extent for survival during cold climate. But hibernation can be dangerous for bats. During the process of hibernation, metabolic waste gets stored in its body which may hinder immune response.
