Louisville KY Wildlife Information

Kentucky Wildlife Commission: 502-564-3400

Kentucky Game WardenIf you have any questions about the wildlife of Louisville, you can contact the Kentucky Wildlife Commission, sometimes called the Kentucky Fish & Wildlife Agency. Kentucky game wardens address many wildlife management matters, from hunting licenses, to poaching, endangered species, and Louisville wildlife management. They deal with wild animals outside the range of a pest control company, such as cougars or bears. If you have a problem with nuisance wildlife in Louisville like squirrels, snakes, bats, or raccoons, the state agency is very unlikely to help. You need to hire a private company (here are their prices) such as Animal Pros at 502-996-8856.

I also have listed several sources for free Louisville wildlife help. One example, if you've found an injured animal or lost baby bird or other baby animal is the Louisville Wildlife Rehabilitation Clinic: 502-410-5494 Or just read below for more info about the wild animals of Louisville.

Types of Wildlife and Animal Problems in Louisville, KY

Kentucky State bird: Northern cardinal
State mammal: Gray squirrel, Thoroughbred horse
State fish: Kentucky spotted bass
State insect: Viceroy butterfly

Kentucky is known for its thoroughbred horse racing. For a state to be so well-known for large grazing animals, it stands to reason that the terrain is fairly flat and hilly with lush grass and a fair amount of forest. The state is covered by bluegrass, a thick form of vegetation that does well in the fertile soil. This state has the country's longest connecting system of waterways.

When people think of elk, they don't usually think of Kentucky, but the state has one of the largest wild elk herds in the country. At one time, bison roamed much of the region. Like most of the United States, bison eventually vanished, and now only a few privately owned herds are left in Kentucky. Other animals that were once native and have now been extirpated include cougars, gray wolves, and red wolves. As far as the state is concerned, there is no breeding population of these animals in Kentucky.

This region has plentiful white-tailed deer populations just as it does elk herds. The unique grasslands provide the grazers with more than enough food to keep them comfortable through all the seasons.

Just because it's known for horses doesn't mean Kentucky has escaped the ravages of nuisance animals. There are plenty of common critters that make life as a homeowner difficult and frustrating. Kentucky has the most common home invader in the country: the house mouse. It also has rats, raccoons, opossums, woodchucks, prairie dogs, porcupines, otters, beavers, and snakes.

Kentucky has been one of the states to see a recent spread of the nine-banded armadillo into the region. These burrowing creatures can cause significant damage in a yard just overnight. Trapping and removal is relatively easy, but the only way to keep them out is with diligent yard care and a fence. br>
Though not really a strict carnivore, the state also has the large black bear as a top-of-the-food-chain predator. These creatures are relatively reclusive, though they can become bold if a dependency on trash starts to develop. Coyotes are also common in Kentucky, but the mischievous canines are not huge nuisance animals because of the short, milder winters seen in the state. Farmers have taken to introducing llamas into herds of sheep and goats to help ward off a coyote that may be eyeing livestock.

Louisville Wildlife Tip
How To Remove Rodents From Your Plumbing System - You should not be surprised to find rodents in unexpected places in your home. Rodents have a way of easily getting into tiny spaces. If they can chew through something, they can get in. Rodents are able to fit into tiny crevices and are efficient chewers, so it doesn't take them much effort to figure out a way to enter your home. This is an unfortunate reality for homeowners, because it means that they can be caught by surprise. Or they are aware that rodents are nesting somewhere in their home and not know where they are. What happens when rodents end up in your plumbing system?

Rodents are able to enter your plumbing system from the vent that is located on the roof of your house. Rodents obviously can't see what is on the other side. All they care about is getting into your home as quickly as possible, and they might end up in undesirable places and end up getting stuck. Once a rodent enters a plumbing system, it will scurry through the pipes, and there is a good chance it could end up stuck in your toilet. Also, if a rodent is trapped in your vents this can cause a plumbing problem. You can reach inside a vent to remove the trapped rodent, but never do this without protective clothing, including gloves. A rodent that has been trapped for some time will probably die, so it can be removed without any hassles. If the rodent is still alive, it would be wiser to call a professional.

Wildlife - Rabies-infested flying mammal bites citizen

However, if any wild animal is witnessed out in the middle of the day, caution should be exercised, Bat Regulation Exterminator said. Bats found lying on the ground at any time of day are a concern. Hooray for wild creatures and critters!

"Bats are a high-risk carrier for rabies," she said. Skunks and raccoons also are at high risk for rabies, Bat Regulation Exterminator said, but just because these animals are a high risk, does not mean that all of them are infected with the disease. For more on Louisville wildlife, read on.

"With any wildlife - you do not ever want to mess with it," she said. "You want to leave it alone." There have been at least four confirmed cases of rabid bats that have either bitten or scratched humans in Louisville, Barton said. Snakes and coyotes are not all mean.

In the 25 years he has worked in the medical profession, Barton said this number of rabies cases is the largest he has witnessed in Louisville. However, Barton said, as far as he knows, there have been no confirmed cases of rabies in humans. "But the bats are testing positive," he said. Remember to treat the wild animals of Louisville, Kentucky, with respect and care.

When the critter capture kid could finally form the garbled words of a toddler he would plead with me to get to go, though he didn't actually know what it was he was asking to do. I guess he felt somehow I was up to something he should be a part of, especially when I was fortunate enough to bring home a raccoon and muskrat. But now, as a knowledgeable kindergarten student, one who studies Field and Stream magazine whenever he can, and who also watches professional bow wildlife trapper Michael Waddell religiously on ESPN, the critter capture kid knows exactly what he wants.
