Akron OH Wildlife Information

Ohio Wildlife Commission: 330-644-2293

Ohio Game WardenIf you have any questions about the wildlife of Akron, you can contact the Ohio Wildlife Commission, sometimes called the Ohio Fish & Wildlife Agency. Ohio game wardens address many wildlife management matters, from hunting licenses, to poaching, endangered species, and Akron wildlife management. They deal with wild animals outside the range of a pest control company, such as cougars or bears. If you have a problem with nuisance wildlife in Akron like squirrels, snakes, bats, or raccoons, the state agency is very unlikely to help. You need to hire a private company (here are their prices) such as Precise Wildlife Services at 330-615-1600.

I also have listed several sources for free Akron wildlife help. One example, if you've found an injured animal or lost baby bird or other baby animal is the Akron Wildlife Rehabilitation Clinic: 330-773-6789 Or just read below for more info about the wild animals of Akron.

Types of Wildlife and Animal Problems in Akron, OH

Ohio State bird: Northern cardinal
State mammal: White-tailed deer
State reptile: Northern black racer
State insect: 7-spotted ladybug

Ohio is a relatively flat state, but it is not made up entirely of plains. This state has dense forest and lush river valleys, and it is the home of many different species of animals. The climate in Ohio is fairly universal. The state experiences hot, humid summers and cold winters. Because the northern part of the state is in the Snow Belt, it is not unusual for heavy, lake-effect snow to be present during the winter. This state experiences a good amount of precipitation all year long.

The animals at the top of the food chain in the state of Ohio are the black bears and the coyotes. There are no wolves or cougars in this state. As always, black bears can be problematic if they learn they can invade campsites or garbage dumps for an easy meal. Most of the time, however, they just visit your yard in the dim hours of morning to raid bird feeders. Unlike the bears, coyotes can be much more of a hassle. Not only are the notoriously loud when howling, they can become prowlers, studying homes and yards looking for an unsuspecting pet or child. This is more common in urban settings where the coyotes have no abundant natural food source. The canines tend to feed on city rats, which helps homeowners with the rodents, though it is an unreliable meal for the canines.

When it comes to nuisance animals, the most common offenders also reside in Ohio. People with wildlife issues often have raccoons in their attics or chimneys, skunks under their porches, woodchucks under their decks, or squirrels in their eaves. Rats and mice can be common housemates as well. If the animals aren't interested in your home, they are interested in the yard. Ohio has voles, moles, and shrews, all of which can damage plants and grass. Along those same size guidelines, the state has an abundance of bats.

Land-loving animals aren't the only ones to make their homes in Ohio. Because the state has numerous tributaries, there are river otters, beavers, and muskrats galore. These animals are not as commonly associated with private homeowner pest issues, but a beaver can dam up an area and cause local flooding. Muskrats like to burrow into dike walls, creating a potential structural failure. Concerns like these belong to the county.

Akron Wildlife Tip
Moth Balls Or Pepemint To Deter Rodents: Do They Work? - Have you heard noises on your attic or ceiling? If you have then chances are that you have rodents up there and they have made a home in the walls or the insulation. Now is the time when you should start getting rid of the rodents because if you do not they will reproduce (and they do so fast) and soon you will have a big problem you may not be able to handle. You can find many solutions online to get rid of rodents and a couple of them are moth balls or peppermint to deter rodents.

While moth balls and peppermint are some of the most quoted solutions for a rodent infestation, the reality is that they are just barely effective. People who suggest moth balls and peppermint do so knowing that it will work a few times, but in general it is a waste of time and effort. The truth is that very few repellents will work against rodents (that includes the name brand repellents), and usually there are better ways to get the rodents out of your home much faster. For real solutions you should look at traps and animal control specialists. Those are the main weapons that you will have at your disposal when you have a rodent infestation.

Wildlife - Controversy erupts over Akron woodchuck and beaver exterminating

Under Ohio Ministry of Natural Resource regulations, people are allowed to harvest as many woodchuck and beaver as they have tags for. This year, Bug sprayers in the Ohio-Wentworth area can each buy two tags for $35 each. For more on Akron wildlife, read on.

The ministry has authorized the second tag because of the high numbers of woodchuck and beaver in the area numbers that Mr. The snake identification picture expert said are out of regulation and costing him money. Snakes and coyotes are not all mean.

"I've lived here 55 years and I've never witnessed as many woodchuck and beaver as now. When I first moved to this land, it would be unusual to see a rats, now they're everywhere. Remember to treat the wild animals of Akron, Ohio, with respect and care.

"They're eating my garden, everything from my euonymus to holly and rhubarb," he said. "I didn't even bother with growing vegetables this year because there was no point." Hooray for wild creatures and critters!

However, fur trappers this week might have to deal with the beginning of the acorn fall, normally in mid-September, which tends to draw fox and coyote away from the corn, soybean and peanut fields they frequent during animal control critter capture period. The action will really crank up in Eastern section counties the last week in September - the second week of animal control critter capture period - as the rut approaches. Biologists in Ohio have mapped out a rough progression of the peak breeding critter capture period - most fur trappers call it the "rut," and it simply indicates those four or five days when the largest number of does in an area are bred. Continued next week ...Akron Wildlife.
