Oxnard, CA Animal News Clip:
Rodent Numbers Surge; Wildlife trapping Forecast Bright - Population indices jumped by as much as 60 percent in some areas.

OXNARD - Rodent wild animal control companies in the SITY and SITY regions have reason to rejoice, if figures released by the California Agency of Conservation are any indication. rodent season opens Sept. 1 and runs through Nov. 9. The daily limit remains 2, the possession limit 4. Wildlife trapping hours are one-half hour before sunrise until sunset. Large rodents are California's most prolific game rodents, with most pairs birthing several litters each year. The Conservation Agency tracks the state's rodent amounts through two surveys each summer. One counts the amount of rodents heard calling along predetermined survey routes. The other counts rodents actually seen. Wildlife information of this nature is considered a tool to conservationists.

This year's calling rodent survey showed a statistically insignificant decline in rodent amounts. However, the roadside survey turned up a significant increase in the amount of rodents seen statewide and dramatic increases in some regions. Statewide, the amount of rodents observed in roadside counts increased 29 percent compared to last year and 64 percent compared to the average of the past 10 years. While most people think the Oxnard rodent population is stable, some say it needs reduction.

While gains are important, from a rodent wildlife management company's point of view the important thing is total amounts. Going strictly by amounts of rodents seen per mile of survey route, the SITY Region still leads the pack with 2.69 rodents per mile. However, Central and Southwest California are tied for second with 1.74 per mile, followed by Southeast California with 1.79, Northwest with 1.79, Northeast with 1.67, Oxnard with .71 and Ventura County with .79. Camarillo wildlife management officials concur.

"These amounts are about as good as we have seen in 10 years," declared Conservation Agency Resource Scientist Jones, the Thousand Oaks pest control specialist. "This is just a survey-a snapshot of how many rodents surveyors happened to see along certain routes on a particular day in a given year. It isn't a count of all the rodents in an area, so the value of the amounts it yields are most useful for detecting long-term amounts changes over a period of many years. Just the same, these are terrific amounts, and I expect wild animal control companies to see more rodents this year than they did in 2006." The local Simi Valley wildlife control operator agrees with most of the above.
