Salinas, California has about 150,000 people and it is located in the center of Monterey County, which is on the Pacific coast just south of Monterey Bay. Salinas is well known for its fertile farming land, and agriculture drives much of the local economy. A lot of California’s produce, including a broccoli, carrots, cabbage, spinach, and watermelons, all come from Salinas. Most notable is that 80% of the lettuce in the United States comes from the farms in Salinas. Aside from farming, Salinas is not a very prosperous city, and the lack of financial stability in the local government has caused the closing of public facilities, including libraries. The poor financial condition of the city has led to local violence from gangs. This has become an issue for the police force and is a continuing struggle for the local government and citizens to this day. However, this struggle pales in comparison to the struggle between homeowners and pesky critters that invade them. We also service the towns of Gonzales, Santa Rita, Castroville, Confederate Corners and also animal control in Natividad, Gabilan Acres, Prunedale, Blanco and pest control in Soledad, King City, Nashua and wild animal services in Elkhorn, Marina, Moss Landing and wildlife management in Cooper, East Garrison, Spreckels Junction.

Salinas, CA Animal News Clip:
Animal Services - Salinas residents oppose dog law

The bill was introduced by Sen. Jackie Speier, D-Hillsborough, who said citizens have a right to try a referendum effort, but she believes there is overwhelming public support for the law. Monterey County animal services in Salinas, California, declined to comment on the matter, as did Santa Cruz Animal Control.

"The people who supported SB861 were many of the animal rights movement leaders," she said. "Their goal is my goal. We don't want unwanted animals to be put down, and the vast majority of dogs in animal shelters are given up because of concern about aggressive behavior." Animal and carcass removal services in Monterey County is dedicated to helping California and Salinas.

But Crapp said the issue is bad owners, not bad dogs. "Bad owners have German shepherds, they have pit bulls, and they have cocker spaniels," she said. "The dogs are dogs." Monterey County animal control says it will continue to help with domestic animal issues, but not with California wildlife problems, such as those in Watsonville or Marina or anywhere in the Monterey Bay area.

Pests - If you can't beat 'em, confuse 'em

These are fuzzy white insects that are found on the tops and bottoms of leaves. Termite Man said they suck sap like crazy and drip their loads over everything. Termite Man said for hackberry or normal aphids, one way to get rid of them is to apply a systemic insecticide called Merit. There are many types of insects and animals in Salinas, and other California cities, but not all of them are pests after all.

Systemic means you apply at the extermination roots and the tree absorbs the material up into the trunk and branches. Merit works against all sorts of sucking insects, and has been used by the county agricultural commissioner to fight the glassy winged sharpshooter. Most local owners of pest control companies in Salinas, California weren’t sure what to make of all this. The Monterey County Pest Control board could not be reached for comment.

Asked if there are beneficial insects that could be accidentally harmed by the extermination chemical, Termite Man said the only beneficial insects that suck are those that suck the blood out of other insects, not trees. As with anything applied in the yard, it's important to read the instructions and follow them. Salinas pest control is an important part of the local economy, but only a few California companies deal with wild animals.
