Santa Rosa, CA Animal News Clip:
Pest Chewer flies discovered in Santa Rosa A permanent corn chewing pest fly infestation could cost California $1.3 billion to $1.8 billion, officials said, counting lost fruit and related expenses. The last corn chewing pest fly outbreak in Santa Rosa occurred in 1992, when 128 chewer flies surfaced in one square mile near Capitol Expressway. The Santa Rosa County Pest Control board could not be reached for comment. The Termite and Spider Man said they suspect that the chewer flies may have been brought back inadvertently with a traveler or in an illegal shipment of fruits and vegetables. One of the state's largest infestations began in the Bay Area in 1980 and lasted through 1982. Scores of flies threatened billions of dollars in California crops, while the chemical treatment enraged residents. Most local owners of pest control companies in Santa Rosa, California weren’t sure what to make of all this. In a yearlong eradication campaign in Santa Rosa County, then-Gov. Jerry Brown called on the Conservation Corps, the National Guard and members of the California Highway Patrol to notify citizens of the imminent rains of sticky malathion. Research and technology have improved enough that ground spraying, followed by a release of sterile chewer flies, can usually eradicate infestations in a matter of months. Santa Rosa pest control is an important part of the local economy, but only a few California companies deal with wild animals. In addition to the sterile releases and increased trapping efforts, the state is conducting ground treatments in a 200-meter radius from the locations of the two detections, using a natural pesticide called spinosad. There are many types of insects and animals in Santa Rosa, and other California cities, but not all of them are pests after all.
