Aurora, CO Animal News Clip:
Wildlife - Nature in the City of Aurora "The chorus frog was the sound of the Aurora area when I was a kid," says The Lover of Deer and Turtles, who spent his formative years in the 1940s and 1950s in the city. "Now we're down to our very last, tiny populations on public land. Most of the best spots for them now are on private land -- that's the best hope for them. And that's possible: We could actually bring them back in all the neighborhoods." Colorado has an abundance of wildlife, and Aurora is no exception. These small frogs require water only to breed, spending most of the year ensconced in hiding places, filling the air with song and sucking down unwanted bugs. "All you see from the street is a wall of facades," The Lover of Deer and Turtles continues, speaking of the typical Aurora streetscape, "but you go in the back and there is a whole block of wild backyard -- it's perfect frog habitat if someone puts a pond in. Although several species of wildlife roam Aurora, only a few, such as raccoons and squirrels, are considered pest wildlife. The chorus frogs would love it. They're really adaptable to the urban environment." This is the kind of adaptation -- on the part of frog and homeowner alike -- that this urban naturalist underground says is a key part of the future of the city's essential nature. Remember to treat the wild animals of Aurora, Colorado, with respect. "We don't want to make Aurora back into all sand dunes," says Squirrel and Snake Man, who roamed the woods of the Presidio as a boy in the '80s. "What we need to do now is use what we have but in a way that mimics the kinds of systems that exist in nature." Colorado has many reptiles, and it’s important to be able to identify Aurora snake species and mammals.
