Colorado is full of wildlife, including snakes, squirrels, raccoons, skunks, opossums, and more. Wildlife removal is a complex field. I recommend professional Highlands Ranch wildlife control services if you want to solve a critter problem legally and correctly. For example, we specialize in animals in the attic, which have broken into the house and almost always have a nest of baby animals. It is necessary to perform correct preventative repairs to keep pest animals a out of your house for good. We perform full building inspection, do the the repairs and we also offer attic decontamination if necessary. Rats and mice love to live in attics, and can chew wires or leave droppings. Some Highlands Ranch animals frequently enter homes, and correct removal is not a simple task.

Highlands Ranch Wildlife Tip:

Will, a squirrel, have a nest of babies in the attic?

Ah, squirrels! Another troublemaker from the rodent family. It seems like all rodents have a thing against clean and undamaged property. Once inside squirrels can cause a lot of damage both in and outside. Squirrels have a set of heavy duty teeth. They can chew through almost an everything you can bring to the table. Once they invade your attic, there is nothing that can't be damaged. Be it your insulation, walls, vents, etc. All shall be chewed through.

But what they damage more is the exterior of the building. For these little critters, wood is but an everyday plaything. They will make countless holes and dents in your wall to act as access points.

They don't enter just like that. It there is a squirrel in the attic, it is almost certain that there is or will soon be a litter or baby squirrels.

When to look?

Like every mother in the world, squirrels also want to keep their beloved infants away from all harm. They usually have nested in tree cavities. When that's out of the question, attics are the second-best preference. Being a human dwelling, attics readily eliminate most of the danger that the mother requires protection from. So why not build a nest there.

If you want to remove any possibility of such an occurrence, inspect your house and attic from time to time during December-February and June-August (yeah, they have two mating seasons). This is when squirrels mate.

But is you finding mark any date between, March-April or July-August, you better find out where the babies are? Of course, noting that the squirrel is a female one.

The "Not to Do" list

So, you inspected tour attic and found out that there is, in fact, a litter present. Well, because it's babies your dealing with, get you "not to do list" ready.

Do not close any rodent holes or openings that lead in or out of the attic. Do not try to trap the squirrel, and never in this situation poison the mother.

The babies are not capable of feeding themselves. So, anything that restricts the mother from reaching her young ones should be avoided.

What is Ideal?

It is best to leave the family be for the moment. Unlike rats, squirrels grow astonishingly fast. In about 8-weeks they go from newborn to full adult size. Then you can trap them all and relocate them or exclude them, and seal up and repair all the damage.

If you remove or poison the mother, the babies will die of hunger. The bodies will start to rot. The smell won't be over the top, but it will be persistent. This will also attract, insects and flies.

How to deal with it immediately?

If you can't or don't want to wait at all. You do however opt for another option. This requires a good eye and a light hand. Hiring a professional will be much better. You may trap the mother and then relocate her someplace else (has to be safe) along with her young ones intact. This way all will be dealt with and no harm will come to the infant squirrels.
