Bridgeport, CT Animal News Clip:
Pest Brief: The Truth About Rats and Mice Contrary to popular belief, Rats and Mice, part of a mammal group called chiroptera—are not disease-spreading bloodsuckers. Rats and Mice have gotten a bad rap. The Fairfield County Pest Control board could not be reached for comment. If your opinion of the mouselike creatures is guided by the myths surrounding them—that they're blind bloodsuckers that transmit disease and nest in human hair—you've got it all wrong. Most local owners of pest control companies in Bridgeport, Connecticut weren’t sure what to make of all this. So says Laura Simon, field director for the Urban Wildlife Program of the HSUS. She runs a wildlife hotline out of the HSUS field office in Connecticut, where she receives more than 5,000 calls from people across the United States every year. Many of those calls concern Rats and Mice, which Simon says are "fascinating, kind and beneficial. Bridgeport pest control is an important part of the local economy, but only a few Connecticut companies deal with wild animals. "They eat insects—not human blood, and they don't hurt people, unless, as with any wild animal, they are handled or provoked," she says. "They do make folks a bit batty, because Rats and Mice have suffered from habitat loss and therefore some have been forced to find occupancy in residential homes—attics, cellars. There are simple and humane solutions for keeping Rats and Mice out of your home." There are many types of insects and animals in Bridgeport, and other Connecticut cities, but not all of them are pests after all.
