Connecticut is full of wildlife, including snakes, squirrels, raccoons, skunks, opossums, and more. Wildlife removal is a complex field. I recommend professional Waterford wildlife control services if you want to solve a critter problem legally and correctly. For example, we specialize in animals in the attic, which have broken into the house and almost always have a nest of baby animals. It is necessary to perform correct preventative repairs to keep pest animals a out of your house for good. We perform full building inspection, do the the repairs and we also offer attic decontamination if necessary. Rats and mice love to live in attics, and can chew wires or leave droppings. Some Waterford animals frequently enter homes, and correct removal is not a simple task.

Waterford Wildlife Tip:

Gopher Prevention - How to keep Gophers away from yard

Preventive, non-lethal measures are better to make use of rather than going to the extent of killing gophers. By using preventive measures you can prevent the problems that come along with gophers in the first place. Not to mention, using preventive measures also don't bring the moral and ethical dilemma, as you are not killing the animal. The following preventive measures can be useful for you:

1. Use your pet's droppings

If you have a cat or a dog, don't throw away all their droppings. Just take a little bit of it and put it down one of the gopher holes. Its pungent odor will deter the gopher from coming back. Also, when gophers smell the litter, they will think that the predator is close enough to attack it.

2. Use smells that the Gophers will find repulsive

Gophers have a very acute sense of smell. Therefore, even a slight smell of any of the following items will keep them away:
  • Use waste fish scraps and place them near the gopher holes

  • Spray castor oil in the gopher tunnels

  • Mix ground coffee beans with your soil

  • Dip cotton balls into Tabasco sauce a number of times so that it is heavily absorbed. Then drop these balls in the tunnels.

  • Drop mothballs into the holes. The smell of naphthalene repels the Gophers.

3. Plant Euphorbia Lathyris

This plant is known to be a popular gopher repellant. Plant a few of these in your yard, and gophers will likely be repelled from your garden. This is particularly useful during the warmer seasons. Other plants that may work for this purpose are marigolds and daffodils.

4. Make lots of noise

Gophers have sensitive ears; hence creating a lot of noise tends to push them away from your yard. You may choose to hang wind chimes which will make noise with the wind. Alternatively, you may decide to place a portable radio in a plastic bag and place it in the gopher tunnel. This will also push the gopher away.

5. Place vibrating stakes.

These devices are either battery operated, or wind operated. The former are invisible above ground, while the latter are visible as they catch the wind to cause the vibrations below ground. All you need to do is to dig a hole deep enough to fit the stake. Then safely place the device in the hole, and use more soil to tighten it and keep it in place.

6. Reduce potential food sources

The fin alway to prevent gophers from entering your yard is to reduce the amount of food available. This would mean that you would have to either get rid of all your plants, vegetables and flowers, or you would have to use baskets to prevent your vegetation.

Conclusion

Make sure that the method you choose is most suited to your garden. Ensure that the method you implement is implemented safely and effectively.
