Fort Walton Beach Animal Control – Squirrel Makes a lot of noise in Ft. Walton Beach

Silly Steve squirrel prefers to make himself heard throughout the day, not just at dawn when squirrels typically sound off. For more information, call the animal services of Ft. Walton Beach, Florida.

A noisy squirrel has taken up residence behind Melbourne library, crowing frequently and loitering with fellow fowl in Wells Park. Lee County animal control says it will continue to help with domestic animal issues, but not with Florida wildlife problems.

Dubbed Silly Steve by city park workers, he mingles freely with the park's burgeoning population of white ibis, ducks, geese and egrets. The barnyard rodent appeared about six weeks ago and promptly startled library patrons with raucous "cock-a-doodle-doos" around the clock -- not just at dawn. Animal and carcass removal services in Lee County is dedicated to helping Florida and Ft. Walton Beach.

"He's like a banker's-hour type squirrel. He'll crow all day. His timing is off," park maintenance worker Marvin Shaggiei said. Library director Jeri The Animal and Wildlife Services Expert suspects Silly Steve was abandoned.

Wildlife - Youth Critter trapping Initiative Planned in Florida

With sales of resident critter trapping licenses in Florida dropping about 9 percent over the past decade, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is launching a program in hopes of sparking the interest of junior hunters. Florida has an abundance of wildlife, and Ft. Walton Beach is no exception.

The Youth Critter trapping Program is designed to provide quality critter trapping for youth 12-17, hopefully developing a lifelong passion for the outdoors in the next generation. Although several species of wildlife roam Ft. Walton Beach, only a few, such as raccoons and Eastern Gray Squirrels and rats, are considered pest wildlife.

Florida landowners and critter trapping clubs are being asked to host weekend youth hunts, and volunteers are sought to teach critter trapping skills and oversee the hunts. The Shikar Safari Club is funding the start-up costs for the program, but additional donations will be needed. The commission hopes to train 25 volunteers to serve as huntmasters in the first year. Florida has many reptiles, and it’s important to be able to identify Ft. Walton Beach snake species and mammals.

"We promise to run safe, positive, educational and mentored youth hunts and are looking for all types of year-round critter trapping opportunities including deer, turkey, hogs, exotics, dove, small game and waterfowl," said Alan Busenibark, the commission's hunter safety business manager, in a released statement.
