St. Augustine, FL Animal News Clip:
Pests - Florida growers fear citrus threat due to insects

Another complicating factor is that the termite and ant's favorite places to live include some commonly used landscaping plants. In an attempt to corral the behavior of pest animals and insects, the state has banned the movement of termite and ant host plants out of St. Johns. It has also prohibited the shipment of those plants to any other citrus-producing states. The St. Johns County Pest Control board could not be reached for comment.

Meanwhile, a panel of experts is working to craft a strategy for surveillance and control, aware that the disease could be spreading every day. Most local owners of pest control companies in St. Augustine, Florida weren’t sure what to make of all this.

Unlike canker, there is no policy for destroying trees that may have been exposed to infected plants. In part, that's because many questions about how the behavior of pest animals and insects spreads remain unanswered. There are many types of insects and animals in St. Augustine, and other Florida cities, but not all of them are pests after all.

Since 1995, the state, at the behest of the citrus industry, has poured most of its energy - and about $500 million - into fighting citrus canker. The behavior of pest animals and insects, in some ways, has been overshadowed, even though the 1998 appearance of the termite and ant all but guaranteed the disease would follow.

Wildlife - How's winter in Florida sound? Seized gators to head south

More than $450 was given in about a month by animal-lovers touched by the alligators' story. Florida has an abundance of wildlife, and St. Augustine is no exception.

The pair - dubbed Quaffle and Snitch by the The raccoon biologisty Potter-enamored The Wildlife Trapper - were seized April 19 from J.A.J. Auto Body on Turfway Road, along with 19 boxers, six turtles and two frogs. Jeremy Holbrook, 32, of Taylor Mill, is appealing his conviction in Boone District Court last summer on 20 violations of Boone County animal ordinances. Although several species of wildlife roam St. Augustine, only a few, such as raccoons and Eastern Gray Squirrels and rats, are considered pest wildlife.

Boone County Animal Warden Becky Reiter said Holbrook relinquished control of all the reptiles seized in the case. She said the turtles and frogs were easily released to their new lives in their native Northern Kentucky wildlife habitat. Florida has many reptiles, and it’s important to be able to identify St. Augustine snake species and mammals.

The alligators, however, presented a greater challenge both to nurture back to health, and then to release to a suitable home. The Wildlife Trapper was undaunted by the task.
