Tampa, FL Animal News Clip:
Pests - Florida growers fear citrus threat due to insects

"We have a lot of suspected trees, but we can't positively identify them," Gabriel said. "So they sit and can spread the disease. It's like we can't say positively that Typhoid Mary has typhoid, so she gets to walk." The Hillsborough County Pest Control board could not be reached for comment.

Gabriel's critique is more vivid than most, but others repeat the theme. Listen to Chuck Reed, the operator of a 20-acre nursery in the heart of Polk County citrus country. Reed Bros. Citrus produces seeds and seed trees for groves. Most local owners of pest control companies in Tampa, Florida weren’t sure what to make of all this.

A third-generation farmer, Reed said he has confidence in state and industry leaders but, like others, asks, "Why isn't there a strategy already?" "My understanding is once you get it," said Reed, "you never get rid of it." There are many types of insects and animals in Tampa, and other Florida cities, but not all of them are pests after all.

Reed and others predict the behavior of pest animals and insects will add "tremendous costs" to their business. To ensure Frederick the wild bird expert trees are free of the behavior of pest animals and insects, he said, they will have to be relocated and "completely isolated" from any areas touched by the disease.
