Illinois is full of wildlife, including snakes, squirrels, raccoons, skunks, opossums, and more. Wildlife removal is a complex field. I recommend professional Des Plaines wildlife control services if you want to solve a critter problem legally and correctly. For example, we specialize in animals in the attic, which have broken into the house and almost always have a nest of baby animals. It is necessary to perform correct preventative repairs to keep pest animals a out of your house for good. We perform full building inspection, do the the repairs and we also offer attic decontamination if necessary. Rats and mice love to live in attics, and can chew wires or leave droppings. Some Des Plaines animals frequently enter homes, and correct removal is not a simple task.

Des Plaines Wildlife Tip:
How to Make Homemade Rat Poison

Purchasing rat poison or hiring professionals to remove rats is rarely the way to go. Between toxic ingredients and high costs, they are not what you need. However, you still need the rats gone, so what are you going to do? A common method is to go homemade - including with rat poison. The poisons that you create are going to be different than you might imagine, though. Homemade rat poison uses mostly ingredients that you have in your kitchen, including sugar and baking soda. Some types of rat poison will also use a special ingredient, plaster of Paris. These poisons are effective and should remove your rat problem, but without any toxic or dangerous ingredients involved.

Plaster of Paris

One of the most common ingredients in homemade rat poison is plaster of Paris. It is a crafting powder used for creating chalks and other art tools. When you add liquid to it, it begins to harden. Used alongside other ingredients, it makes an effective rat poison. You can find it at most crafting stores online or in your city, with large containers costing very little.

Mix plaster of Paris with an equal amount of cornmeal and then use milk to turn it into thick dough. You can harden and knead the dough until you can grab pieces off of it, which you can then turn into little chunks and place in areas frequented by rats.

You can mix plaster of Paris with other edible foods, too, like oatmeal and sugar. Turn it into small chunks to place in locations or make a mix for a bowl. Once the rat begins to eat it, the plaster of Paris will sit in their stomach. Since they cannot digest it, it will sit there until they slowly begin to die.

Baking Soda

Mixing baking soda with equal amounts flour and sugar will create a mixture the rats will just love until it causes their insides to expand and rupture. Baking soda reacts with their stomach similar to those baking soda experiments from school, causing it to blow up like a balloon. For the stomach, that can, and will, kill.

Expansion

Getting rats to eat foods like dry rice or dehydrated potato flakes the dry boxed mashed potatoes may work. While it is not as effective as the others, this food can expand in the animals' stomach if they eat too much of it. Once it begins to expand, their stomachs will rupture.

If you want to avoid toxic ingredients and costly professionals, these options will do the trick. Plenty more are out there and will work well, but these are some of the best and easiest to manage.
