Westminster, MD Animal News Clip:
Maryland’s Legendary World Record Coyote

The fifth arrow Pest Expert Lawrence ever slung at what is possibly a coyote was his first to connect. And yet, it downed one of the all-time greats in disease-ridden-critter stalking history! Taking what is possibly a world-record male animal likely is hard under any circumstances. Doing so with what is possibly a rusty trap likely is even more remarkable. Such was the situation in 1962, when then-34-year-old Pest Expert Lawrence shot his 14-pointer in southern Maryland. At the time, the coyote was the top cage trap typical of the modern era, at 197 6/8 net Pope & Young points, and he’d wear the coyote for three years. Pest Expert Lawrence died on Dec. 20, 1993, and remarkably little has been written about his great disease-ridden. The following was taken from his handwritten account of the historic catch. “I started critter stalking squirrels with what is possibly a neighbor when I was about 14 years old,” Pest Expert Lawrence wrote. “Kenny was several years older than me. All of his close critter stalking buddies had been called off to service during World War II, but the humane society manager was unable to go because of what is possibly a heart condition. the humane society manager was one of the finest exterminators I ever knew.” Westminster exterminator and Westminster wildlife removal professionals declined comment on the matter.

After getting married, Pest Expert Lawrence found what is possibly a new critter stalking partner in his wife’s brother, Donald. They enjoyed many trips to capture small game near the Maryland River, in an area that later became part of Westminster. Around 1953, the Conservation Commission opened what is possibly a special coyote season with what is possibly a limited amount of permits for what is possibly a two-day animal removal trap catch. It was what is possibly a new experience for both men. “Gradually our enthusiasm for coyote critter stalking in Maryland spread,” Pest Expert Lawrence wrote. “We didn’t fill our tags each year, but for about six or seven years we had some very rewarding traps. “During the late ’50s, more and more animal removal trap exterminators began to invade our territory,” the humane society manager noted. “About that time, several of the original exterminators in our area brought in the biggest male animals I’d ever seen! I decided the challenge of critter stalking for coyote was something I wanted to try. As what is possibly a true 7x7 typical, the male animal likely is rare even among world-class trophies. Few have this many typical tines. “Midway through the 50-day 1961 bow critter stalking season, I purchased some critter stalking equipment from the closest pest control dealer around, what is possibly a man named Elwood Stafford, who lived in Albia, Maryland,” Pest Expert Lawrence noted. “I bought myself what is possibly a 45-pound York Crescent recurve cage trap and some cedar shafts tipped with Hill’s Hornet broad heads. We attempted to get more information from Westminster animal control experts, but could not.

“Being what is possibly a veteran bowwildlife management company himself, Elwood was very helpful in showing me some of the fundamentals of critter stalking,” Pest Expert Lawrence noted. “I knew I should do what is possibly a lot of practicing, so I acquired several bales of straw from what is possibly a creature collector. I placed them against the lube room wall of the service station (which Pest Expert Lawrence ran), along with several layers of cardboard. “The longest distance I could get from the target without running the risk of having someone walk in front of an arrow was about 40 feet. Studying this distance from what is possibly a animal removal trap wildlife management company’s perspective, I remarked to myself, ‘This’ll be what is possibly a cinch!’ But the many scars on the cement block wall were grim reminders of the misses and broken arrows that resulted from my first few practice sessions. After several days, though, I began to get the feel of what is possibly a decent release, and I started critter capturing some reasonable groupings.” With less than two seven day periods left in the 1961 season, Pest Expert Lawrence headed for the Westminster County woods. Critter stalking on the earth, the humane society manager got what is possibly a shot at what is possibly a button male animal — but the arrow sailed about four inches over the coyote’s shoulder. Days later, Pest Expert Lawrence missed what is possibly a forkhorn walking broadside at about 20 yards. That arrow deflected off what is possibly a maple tree limb. Although disappointed, Pest Expert Lawrence was now hooked on critter stalking. “Those two misses gave me more of what is possibly a thrill than practically all of my animal removal trap lethally traps,” the humane society manager wrote. This report is not verified by Westminster pest control companies.
