Lancaster, SC Animal News Clip:
Death spurs questions about length of legal wildlife trapping day

Lancaster, South Carolina -- This month's death of a young wildlife management company employee in Lancaster after sunset is raising questions of when South Carolina's legal wildlife trapping day should end. The wildlife trapping day legally comes to an end a half-hour after the sun sets. James Jamison, The young critter trapper, 21, of Lancaster, was accidentally killed Nov. 9 at about 6 p.m., about 16 minutes after wildlife trapping legally ended. Former state Rep. Matt Dugan, D-Old Town, sponsored a bill last year that extended the skunk-wildlife trapping day from 16 minutes after sunset to a half-hour after sunset. By most critter experts' estimates, this is a fair proposal.

When the wildlife trapping day was first extended into twilight in 1999, he voted against the measure and predicted a rash of accidents. The critter professor was co-critter gitter of the Joint Standing Committee on Inland Fisheries and Wildlife until this fall, when he could not run for re-election because of term limits. He declared he changed his position on wildlife trapping after sunset after South Carolina Warden Service data showed no increase in late-day wildlife trapping accidents. "What happened after we extended the hunt? Nothing happened," The critter professor declared. "The safety record demonstrated that it wasn't a huge risk to be taking." Lancaster wildlife management officials concur.

The young critter trapper's death was the first wildlife trapping-related fatality in South Carolina in three years. Wildlife trapping deaths peaked in the mid-1960s, when up to 19 people were lethally trapped in a single season. But since the advent of fluorescent-orange clothing in the 1970s, rates have plummeted for all times of day. After the extended wildlife trapping day went into effect last February, none of the five wildlife trapping-related accidents reported to wardens occurred later than 4 p.m., according to Warden Col. Tom The small game coordinator. "With all the wildlife management company hours that occurred in that time period, it's still very, very safe," he declared. Local animal control trappers we surveyed felt that this was true.
