Pigeons on your Property

Pigeons are commonly found in urban areas as they have been able to adapt to almost any habitat. Pigeons are able to roost in the attics of a home. They will usually build nests that are flimsy made primarily out of sticks and other debris that they found. Due to their ability to easily adapt, their diet of mainly seeds and fruits has also expanded to bread, french fries and other food that humans have left behind.

Pigeons are able to be large pests, but they may also be dangerous for people. Some pigeons have brought disease into homes. If you find that you have a pigeons or a few residing in your attic, you will need to make your home less pigeon friendly. One of the first things that you may need to do is dry up any water that is standing around your home. You will also need to remove any food around the outside of your home that they are able to feed on.

You will need to complete a thorough search of your home to search for any nests inside and outside your home. When you find their nests, you will need to begin to discourage them from nesting any longer. You are able to do this by removing their nests and covering up the area. Pigeons will commonly nest in attics and roof gutters.

If this does not discourage your pigeons from returning, you may want to consider using some type of pigeon repellent. This may include plastic spike strips to chemicals. If all else fails and you are unable to safely and humanely remove the pigeons, you will need to contact a pest control specialist. They are experts at knowing how to remove the pigeons from your property and taking them to a place that is more welcoming.

The most commonly dealt with bird problem in the US is that of pigeons roosting on buildings. Feral pigeons tend to live in urban areas, and they prefer to roost on and in buildings, where they leave nesting material, feathers, parasites, and worst of all, their unsanitary and corrosive droppings. The only way to permanently solve such problems is to install bird exclusion materials, such as bird spikes or netting. Bird trapping is also an option, but it's usually a poor and temporary fix. In addition to pigeons, other birds can cause problems in certain other situations: woodpeckers damaging houses, sparrows stuck inside retail spaces, Chimney Swifts nesting inside chimneys, etc. If you want to learn more, please read my How To Get Rid of Birds page.
