Pigeon Traps

If you reside in an urban area, you may have noticed numerous pigeons around the area. Pigeons often roost in attics, roofs, warehouse and parking garages. Pigeons are known to carry fleas, mites, ticks and disease. They also have acid in their droppings that is able to remove the paint from cars, concrete and the sides of buildings.

Pigeons may be pests, but there is no reason that they do not need to be removed humanely. If you suspect that there are pigeons roosting inside your parking garage you will need to look around the property to confirm. If you find that there are pigeons roosting, you will need to remove their nests. Nesting material will cause damage to the building, as well as clog up drains and vents.

Once you have removed their nests, you should make your parking garage unwelcoming. You are able to do this by covering up vent areas with nylon coated stainless steel. This will make it uncomfortable for a pigeon to land.

You may also want to consider placing a pigeon trap on the roof, if you are able. Most traps will come preassembled and are designed to be humane at catching multiple pigeons. You will need to use whole corn, popcorn or bread as bait inside the trap. Pigeons will enter traps easily when they notice the bait. You are also able to leave a pigeon or two inside the trap to lure others in. If you choose to leave pigeons inside the trap, you will need to provide them with a bowl of water and constant food. Also, if you are setting the trap in a location that has direct sunlight, you will need to place a cover or something over the trap to provide them with shade. Pigeon traps are designed to be humane, but they need your assistance to remain that way.

The most commonly dealt with bird problem in the US is that of pigeons roosting on buildings. Feral pigeons tend to live in urban areas, and they prefer to roost on and in buildings, where they leave nesting material, feathers, parasites, and worst of all, their unsanitary and corrosive droppings. The only way to permanently solve such problems is to install bird exclusion materials, such as bird spikes or netting. Bird trapping is also an option, but it's usually a poor and temporary fix. In addition to pigeons, other birds can cause problems in certain other situations: woodpeckers damaging houses, sparrows stuck inside retail spaces, Chimney Swifts nesting inside chimneys, etc. If you want to learn more, please read my How To Get Rid of Birds page.
