Owls Stalking your Animals

To many people owls are unique creatures that have big, clear, and beautiful eyes. However, if you own a farm, owls are predators that can kill your livestock. Owls feed on small livestock and poultry. If you discover that you have an owl lurking in the shadows, there are some things that you are able to do to discourage the owls from your location.

It is important to keep in mind that owls are protected by federal and state laws. You are unable to capture, keep or destroy owls. One of the best solutions to having an owl in your trees is to contact a professional animal control company. They are experts at removing owls safely and humanely.

The best way to eliminate an owl is to retrain your farm animals. If your ducks, chickens, pigeons and so on are free range and allowed to roam freely in the evening, you will need to house them at night. Your poultry will get used to moving indoors into barns or coops by putting their food and water in each evening. Owls primarily hunt when the sun goes down, so at dusk, begin moving your livestock inside.

If you are unable to house them in the evening, you will need to fence them in. This includes fencing above them, as well. You are able to use chicken wire or nylon. This should also be done if you have a pond that has ducks roaming around in it.

You should remove any surfaces that allow the owl to perch within 100 yards of your home. If you cannot remove these objects, you can install spikes or metal cones on the top. This will deter the owls from landing. Once the owls are no longer able to observe their prey prior to attacking, they will usually move.

The most commonly dealt with bird problem in the US is that of pigeons roosting on buildings. Feral pigeons tend to live in urban areas, and they prefer to roost on and in buildings, where they leave nesting material, feathers, parasites, and worst of all, their unsanitary and corrosive droppings. The only way to permanently solve such problems is to install bird exclusion materials, such as bird spikes or netting. Bird trapping is also an option, but it's usually a poor and temporary fix. In addition to pigeons, other birds can cause problems in certain other situations: woodpeckers damaging houses, sparrows stuck inside retail spaces, Chimney Swifts nesting inside chimneys, etc. If you want to learn more, please read my How To Get Rid of Birds page.
