Getting Rid of Owls
Many people view owls in their trees as an annoyance. While owls are beautiful and unique creatures who feed on poultry or other small livestock, most homeowner’s do not prefer them hanging around.
Owls are protected by federal and state laws. It is illegal for you to destroy the animal. Most laws have even restricted people from being able to shoot near the owl. If you own a farm and have pigeons, chicken and ducks that freely roam around your property, you may need to begin housing them in the evening. If you want to eliminate the owls from your property, you need to prevent their access to the birds they commonly feed on.
You should move your farm birds indoors in the evening when owls begin their hunt. If you begin providing your farm birds with food and water inside during dusk, they will usually get used to being moved indoors when the sun sets. Once your farm birds are housed indoors, the owls will no longer have access to them and hunt for food somewhere else.
You will also need to remove any objects or surfaces that the owl may perch on. Owls like to observe their prey prior to attacking. If you have objects within 100 yards of your home, you should remove them. If you cannot physically eliminate these objects, you should install spike strips or metal cones on the top of the poles and surfaces to deter the owl from landing.
You should also consider installing decoys to scare the owls. These decoys can be something as simple as a scarecrow. Owls are intelligent so you will need to purchase a decoy that moves or makes noise, or you will need to move the decoy every few days. Hawk statues can also be an effective scare tactic.
The most commonly dealt with bird problem in the US is that of pigeons roosting on buildings. Feral pigeons tend to live in urban areas, and they prefer to roost on and in buildings, where they leave nesting material, feathers, parasites, and
worst of all, their unsanitary and corrosive droppings. The only way to
permanently solve such problems is to install bird exclusion materials, such as bird spikes or netting. Bird trapping is also an option, but it's usually a poor and temporary
fix. In addition to pigeons, other birds can cause problems in certain other situations: woodpeckers damaging houses, sparrows stuck inside retail spaces, Chimney Swifts nesting inside chimneys, etc.
