In my job as a wildlife control operator, I usually deal with the same 8 types of animals: raccoons, squirrels, rats, opossums, armadillos, snakes, bats, and birds. However, from time to time I get a chance to handle an uncommon species. I really relish these jobs. The above photos are all of animals that I don't usually handle. If you want to learn more, please read my How To Get Rid of Groundhogs page.

It’s Groundhog Day - You might have been surprised to see this adorable groundhog in my picture collection, wondering what one was doing in the sultry weather of Florida. Well I will give credit where it is due. This cute little fellow was caught by my friend Bruce who lives in Massachusetts. The groundhog’s prison sentence came after Bruce found it burrowing under his porch and ruining his plants. He called me up for help, but ended up learning how to catch a groundhog online after I played a prank on him (I never said I am a saint).

Many professional animal removers prefer using lethal traps for groundhogs, but thankfully, Bruce did not choose to do that. Instead he used a live cage trap which is exactly what I would have used too if I were in his place. To catch this rodent, you need to place the trap right at the entrance of the burrow it has created. You can also set it on the pathways that the groundhog uses on the ground’s surface. As with any kind of trap, you have to lure the animal by placing its favorite foods inside the trap. Groundhogs mostly prefer things like corn or broccoli.

Another way of setting the trap is to put it directly on the burrow’s opening once the groundhog sets out for a walk. Place some debris and leaves in it to create a camouflage. When the groundhog will try to re-enter the hole, it will get trapped right in. What you can do to make your job easier is to create an artificial pathway by placing a large leaf or wood plank, directing the groundhog towards the trap. It will take some time and patience but it will certainly be worth it once you have successfully caught the intruder.

Or if you want to save yourself the hassle, simply call a wildlife removal expert and get the job done professionally. That is what I would recommend over someone inexperienced taking up the job.

AAAnimal Control is a privately owned wildlife removal and pest control business, located in Orlando Florida. I deal strictly with wild animals including ones that have died inside houses.
