Wildlife endangers Berkeley project Eric Sherman, a local conservation officer pointed to a "well documented" historical bog turtle site less than 2,000 feet from the property's western boundary in Oakland, CA and Sherman has the state's most active concentration of slimy big-eyed newts. California has an abundance of wildlife, and Berkeley is no exception. "The commission needs much more information on the wildlife resources of the site, especially on wetland-dependent species, to render an informed decision concerning this application," he wrote. Although several species of wildlife roam Berkeley, only a few, such as raccoons and squirrels, are considered pest wildlife. The Conservation officer said developers failed to conduct "due diligence" in considering the site's wildlife resources when drawing up their plans.
