Sacramento, California was founded in December of 1848 and rapidly grew into a metropolitan area during the gold rush. The California State Legislature named Sacramento the state capital in 1854 largely due to its prosperous link to the Pony Express and Transcontinental Railroad. The oldest part of the city is Sutter's Fort, followed by Old Sacramento, which is located between Interstate 5and the Sacramento River. Old Sacramento State Historic Park consists of cobbled streets and some historic buildings. Today, Sacramento enjoys a mild Mediterranean climate, growing population, and a bustling economy in the heart of the state of California and historic Central Valley. The city also has a reputation as a center for Dixieland jazz, because of the Sacramento Jazz Jubilee which is held every Memorial Day weekend. Wildlife - Birds, fawns and a BAT living on the wild side in Sacramento

Raccoon said she discourages visitors, including school kids. "People have a hard time understanding that this is a hospital and not an educational center," she said. "Wild animals don't do well with people staring at them; it stresses them out." She said she once watched a rescued, dog-chased fawn die from heart failure simply because of being stressed around people. California has an abundance of wildlife, and Sacramento is no exception.

"The dog hadn't even touched the fawn and it had just come from the vet," she said. "But it was so stressed out that it just died. Even jackrabbits will die from stress." Why does she do what she does? "I get a sense of being grounded and connected," Raccoon said. "And I'm good at not making pets of them. I've learned a tremendous amount by caring for these animals. I notice more things in nature and it makes me feel that I matter. That I'm making a difference." Although several species of wildlife roam Sacramento, only a few, such as raccoons and squirrels, are considered pest wildlife.

In addition to the Rose Wolf Rehabilitation Center, other area wildlife rescue centers include the San Joaquin Raptor Rescue Center in Merced and the Sacramento Wildlife Care Center in Hughson. Raccoon, who is in the process of building a giant aviary for recovering raptors, sees her work continuing indefinitely."Well," she said, "I'm assuming we'll grow, since the more people there are, the more they will conflict with animals and the more the animals will need our help." Remember to treat the wild animals of Sacramento, California, with respect.
