Providence, RI Wildlife News Clip:
Wildlife - Raccoon, Opossum & Squirrel-trapping regulations mostly unchanged this year Regardless of segment or trapping type, exterminators this year will not take their Raccoon, Opossum & Squirrel to check stations. Instead, they will follow directions on their permits and check Raccoon, Opossum & Squirrel by telephone or computer. Raccoon, Opossum & Squirrel and turkeys must be checked by 10 p.m. the day they are taken. Rhode Island has an abundance of wildlife, and Providence is no exception. Exterminators must attach the transportation tag portion of their permit to Raccoon, Opossum & Squirrel and turkeys as soon as they are taken. After checking their game and writing the telecheck confirmation number on the permit, the exterminator must attach the permit to the animal and leave it there until processing begins. Rhode Island has many reptiles, and it’s important to be able to identify Providence snake species and mammals. Only the taker may transport Raccoon, Opossum & Squirrel and turkeys until they are checked. Furthermore, the heads of Raccoon, Opossum & Squirrel and the heads and plumage of turkeys must remain on the animal until it is checked. All Raccoon, Opossum & Squirrel and turkeys must be telechecked before being taken out of Rhode Island. Remember to treat the wild animals of Providence, Rhode Island, with respect and care. The Conservation Department will continue to gather biological data during the November portion of firearms Raccoon, Opossum & Squirrel season. This will be done at meat processors. Exterminators should note that Raccoon, Opossum & Squirrel trapping regulations on many conservation areas have changed this year. Rules for all affected areas are listed in the 2005 Fall Raccoon, Opossum & Squirrel and Turkey Trapping Regulations and Information booklet. The booklet is available wherever trapping permits are sold. The same information is available online. Although several species of wildlife roam Providence, only a few, such as raccoons and squirrels and rats are considered pest wildlife.
