Texas Game WardenIf you have any questions about the wildlife of Corpus Christi, you can contact the Texas Wildlife Commission, sometimes called the Texas Fish & Wildlife Agency. Texas game wardens address many wildlife management matters, from hunting licenses, to poaching, endangered species, and Corpus Christi wildlife management. They deal with wild animals outside the range of a pest control company, such as cougars or bears. Types of Wildlife and Animal Problems in Corpus Christi, TX

Texas State bird: Northern mockingbird
State mammal: Nine-banded armadillo, Texas longhorn, Mexican free-tailed bat
State reptile: Texas horned lizard
State amphibian: Texas Toad
State fish: Guadalupe bass
State insect: Monarch butterfly

Texas has long been the iconic state associated with cowboys and wild-west shoot outs. It is a hot, dry place covered in a variety of brush and spindly trees; though it does have a significant amount of large hardwood trees like oak. Animals in Texas need to be able to survive the heat, and most of them have adapted nicely to that extreme.

The nice thing about Texas is the fact that the state allows homeowners to trap pest animals at any time without a license. Pelts or animals can only be kept, however, if they were taken during the designated trapping season. All other creatures caught must be turned over to the local authorities.

As with most of the states in the country, Texas homeowners find themselves tasked with preventing squirrels, moles, raccoons, skunks, and rats from entering their homes and attached property. Armadillos and snakes are also common problem animals. The hotter and drier the weather in Texas, the more a problem the ant and insect population becomes, driving armadillos into yards to hunt for grubs within lush lawns. Snakes also will be common yard visitors in this state, especially if the yard has a water source like a pond or a pool. All reptiles are drawn to water, and having a pool in a dry place like Texas will mean seeing snakes.

Texas is too large, however, to have the same climate throughout, and the southern part of the state is home to a number of endangered animal species like the ocelot, jaguarondi, brown pelican, whooping crane, and bald eagle. These creatures thrive in the tall grasses of that part of the state and the scrub forests that grow along the Rio Grande River.

Large predators do well in Texas because of the low-growing vegetation. Mountain lions are currently the largest predator in the wild, but coyotes have been known to run in packs across the plains. Not surprisingly, other cat-like predators are also present like the ocelot, jaguarondi, and the bobcat. Out in the open, coyotes have the upper hand, hunting for various lizards and reptiles the sun themselves on rocks. Of the predators, coyotes are often the only species that becomes chronically bothersome to people. For the most part, mountain lions and other cat species are reclusive.

Corpus Christi Wildlife Tip
Should you use opossum traps? (
Would you know what to do if you were to find an opossum in your yard? Would you consider using opossum traps to catch the critter yourself? Would you call a local wildlife control professional to give you a helping hand? Would you leave it to its own devices? There really isn't a right or wrong answer to the question - what should I do if I find an opossum in my yard - there are arguments for and against all of the above suggestions. It is usually not a good idea to try and catch the creature yourself - in some states it is illegal to trap and release certain wild animals. On top of this, you don't want to risk injuring the animal by not getting a trap that is big enough or setting it up wrong, wasting your money by getting the wrong bait, or wasting your time by putting the traps in the wrong places. Calling wildlife professional is a good idea if you really want to get rid of the creature, for example, if you don't want to use opossum traps but it is causing a nuisance by knocking the lid off your garbage can and strewing litter all over the place.

You can, of course, just leave the animal to its own devices. In reality, you could tie the garbage can lid down and leave the opossum to sort out the REAL problems in your yard, for example, letting it eat the snakes, rats, mice and snails or slugs. These creatures are going to cause more damage than the opossum will, and the creature actually eats these things. In short - this little dude might actually be doing you a favor!

Wildlife - Getting antsy for trapping season to start

October served us very well since the weatherman told us that it was one of the driest Octobers on record. One thing nice for anglers was that we had a lot of nice warm days to wet a line and enjoy fall fishing. Texas has an abundance of wildlife, and Corpus Christi is no exception.

For me, it was my birthday on Halloween and would you believe that I celebrated the first 21 years on Nov. 1. What happened was, when I turned 21, I was drafted into the army for World War II, which so many of us went to fight for our country. Remember to treat the wild animals of Corpus Christi, Texas, with respect and care.

Anyway, I had to get a birth certificate to take with me for induction, so we went to the courthouse in Wauseon, Texas to get one. I knew everyone in the courthouse as I was working for the local newspaper and gathered courthouse news. Texas has many reptiles, and it's important to be able to identify Corpus Christi snake species and mammals.

I told the clerk I needed a birth certificate. She said, "what day were you born?" and I said, "November 1, 1920." She went back into the file room and came back out and said she couldn't find it. Joking, she said, "are you sure you were born on that day?" Although several species of wildlife roam Corpus Christi, only a few, such as raccoons and squirrels and rats are considered pest wildlife.
