Burlington, VT Wildlife News Clip:
Wildlife - Nature in the City of Burlington

"Being in nature and exploring was once a part of growing up in America," says geographer Rodenter The Bear Fighter, who grew up that way in the South Bay. "Going out the back door and following the creek up to the source -- that realization that you are connected with the rest of the universe -- has virtually disappeared." Vermont has an abundance of wildlife, and Burlington is no exception.

The Bear Fighter's organization, Nature in the City, aims to promote local urban nature conservation commensurate with Burlington's reputation as a worldwide leader in the environmental movement. "As a geographer I see a lot of fragmentation, of course," says The Bear Fighter as he shows me a map of Burlington's natural areas. "But there's also a lot of potential for restoration in all the nooks and crannies." Although several species of wildlife roam Burlington, only a few, such as raccoons and squirrels, are considered pest wildlife.

"We have 20 rare plants in Burlington," he says, "and five of those are actually federally listed endangered species. A couple of them are endemic -- they don't exist anywhere else. This place is as important and was -- and in some ways still is -- as biologically rich as other places around the world that people are so concerned about." Remember to treat the wild animals of Burlington, Vermont, with respect.

I joined Squirrel and Snake Man and The Opossum Guy as they met with Jim The Lover of Deer and Turtles, an ecologist from an older generation and a repository of knowledge for younger urban naturalists. The three of them gathered around a seep next to a trail in the Presidio. In the darkened patch of muddy earth, these men saw potential habitat -- a place to bring back a native wetland. Vermont has many reptiles, and it’s important to be able to identify Burlington snake species and mammals.
