A mother and her baby squirrel.

Customer Squirrel Email: Hi David, I recently ran a squirrel out of my attic. I have closed up all the holes, so that it could not get back in easily. As a result, we now have a female gray hanging around house everyday about the time they would return to the nest. This has been going on for about 5-6 days now. I do not think there a any babies in the attic, as I have checked every nook and cranny with mirrors and light and did not find anything. Besides, after 5 days would I not start to smell the babies if they are there? Does this squirrel just keep coming back because she knows that's where her nest was? I actually think she had not given birth yet, as the day I closed the last hole, she was extremely fat, and then after a few days she was back to normal size. She was not in the attic at this time. How long will this behavior continue? Any insight to this would be helpful. Thank you, Mike

My Answer: Hard to say, of course, but I expect the mother squirrel will quit after abut 8 days.

Probably the most common human/wildlife conflict nationwide is the one between people and squirrels. The Eastern Gray Squirrel is an agile and common suburban and urban animal, and it loves to chew and explore. They frequently raid the birdfeeder, but this isn't a big problem. The real problem is that squirrels commonly seek out places in which to live, and this commonly includes human dwellings - attics, crawl spaces, walls, chimneys, and more. They chew and often cause damage inside buildings, to wood and electrical wires. The only way to permanently solve a squirrel problem is to find out how the rodents are gaining access to the inside of the building, and fix those openings, after the animals have been trapped and removed, of course. One-way exclusion devices also work very well for squirrel problems in buildings. If you want to learn more, please read my How To Get Rid of Squirrels page.
