Rodents eat a lot of things. Most things, in fact. That's what they are known for. If rats get into your home, they devour everything and anything that they can lay their paws on. This could be cereal from a box that the kids were expecting to eat for breakfast. It could even be a bag of dried dog food stored away in the back of the cupboard. They will eat whatever they come across; anything that offers some kind of nutritional value. Bugs, grasshoppers, beetles, caterpillars, cockroaches, and other insects offer plenty of nutritional value, especially as far as protein is concerned, and this is the perfect excuse for rats and other rodents to eat them.

When you're talking about scavengers, no creature or critter is off-limits, especially when other forms of food are so scarce. Insects can fill the place of a light snack in the middle of the day for a rat, when it isn't safe for them to get into your home and devour whatever is on offer inside there.

Alongside insects, rats are known to tear through garbage cans, even eating bad food and leftovers that people throw out in the trash. They're opportunistic hunters as well as scavengers, and they can't afford to be what we could class as “picky eaters”. When studied, rats that live in the wild often suffer with health problems as a result of poor nutrition. Sadly, as much as survival is easier when you're not a picky eater, it can come with its fair share of hazards to health.
