They say that there is more than one way to skin a cat, but does that mean that there is more than one way to kill a rodent? That statement may be true, but there are many who wonder if using a poison is a viable option to get rid of these little pests. You may not like a raccoon, possum, or rat coming around your yard, but does that mean that you should choose a poison as the means of disposing of them? That’s a good question, and the answer really is no.

If this is a simple matter of whether a poison will do the job or not, then the answer to that is obviously yes. The kinds of poisons that you can purchase are quite effective at disposing of the average rodent, making sure that your pest won’t be coming around anymore.

That sounds great, and that may make you wonder why there would be those who would be against the use of a poison. The answer to that is a little more complicated than simply yes or no.

The reason that many feel that a poison is a dangerous option is because of the potential issues that may arise because you used this compound to handle your rodent problem. For example, if you leave out some kind of pellet that is intended for rats, squirrels, possums, or other rodents to eat, what is to say that your cat or dog would not find those a tasty treat as well. You may be able to hide the pellets behind your refrigerator to make it so only the rats or mice could get to them, but what if you put them in your yard for a raccoon? What is to keep your dog from getting to them considering they have the same exact access as the raccoon does. This is one of the reasons why it is such a dangerous option.

The other problem you face is that while you may handle your problem, this means that if you are not able to locate the dead rodents right away then you have a rotting, decaying animal somewhere on your property or even in your home. This not only will even unbelievably obnoxious smell which could drive you from your house, but it can also attract bugs and other rodents who would see that as a tasty treat. By eliminating one problem you may actually create several more. That simply doesn’t sound like a good option at all.

Yes, it is true that the poison will eliminate your rodent. However, there are many other issues that will arise as a result in that simply may not be worth it to you. You should look at other options to assist you with this problem and you will likely find that there are better options that leave less of a risk to you, your family, and your pets than using a poison would.
