Cage traps are one way of removing wild animals from your building, both commercial and residential, but with so many on the market, it can be hard to know where to start. Big traps, little traps, multi-traps, electrical traps ... There are so many. And they’re all built to trap different animals too, so you’ll need to have some knowledge of what you’re catching before you try and catch it.

If you attempt to use a mouse trap to trap a rat, you won’t have quite the desired outcome. The trap won’t be big enough to contain the much bigger rat, and it is likely to only partially capture the creature. Rats and other rodents have an awful habit of gnawing their own limbs off in a desperate bid to break free of a trap, and that’s the scene you’ll probably meet. That’s also the reason why we wouldn’t advise that you use glue traps either. In terms of humane, they aren’t.

The same idea works for cage traps too — if you use a trap that is too big or too small for the animal you’re trying to capture, it just won’t do the job. Using traps is a whole load more than just setting, baiting, and waiting. A lot of thought and careful planning needs to go into making sure these traps actually work.

Rather than looking at the best brand of cage trap, it is better to work out the right type of trap you should be using first. If you have a larger animal, such as an opossum or a raccoon, you will need a trap that has been designed to hold an animal of that size. Squirrels will need smaller cages. If you were to put a squirrel in a raccoon trap — a trap that has been designed for a larger animal, the squirrel will have plenty of room to play around in, and it is likely to throw itself around a little. In the process it might injure itself, and that will make releasing the animal back into the wild again very difficult. The trick is getting the right kind of trap, or animal removal method, than looking at brands.
