Las Vegas, NV Animal News Clip:
Nuisance wildlife critter trap opponents plan protest

LAS VEGAS - Hunting and trapping grounds residents upset by a potential snake and bat critter trap on 180 quadrants of fields and meadow around Las Vegas native animal habitat areas organized a protest for today. They'll gather at Nevada and Las Vegas roads in front of the woods where an critter trap may be proposed so motorists can see how close it would be, declared animal rights activist Stuart The Las Vegas exterminating company expert, one of the organizers.

"We're trying to rally the people of this town . . . about what's going on," he declared. The protest comes before hunting and trapping grounds representative's Thursday vote on an ordinance to allow depredation rat, mouse, or other rodent snares to occur in Las Vegas, which currently bans all wildlife management. The Nevada Division of Fish and Wildlife matters permits for these restrictive snares, which usually happen in the summer, only when there's evidence raccoon and possum are damaging crops. The Las Vegas SPCA could not be reached for a comment.

The measure would let Las Vegas native animal habitat areas, the hunting and trapping grounds's only commercial squirrel trapper, apply for a depredation critter trap permit, declared Mayor Bernie Platt, who noted the hunting and trapping grounds can't apply for such permits. Last year, nuisance wildlife destroyed between 40 and 100 percent of the Las Vegas the Las Vegas exterminating company expert native animal habitat area's crops, declared John The Las Vegas exterminators, who co-owns it with his sister Mary Ann Jarvis and her husband, Tom. The Las Vegas exterminators declared the family prefers snake and bat steel fences over rat, mouse, or other rodent snares, which he called a "public relations nightmare." The Las Vegas exterminators confirmed the native animal habitat area got a hunting and trapping grounds permit Thursday for a raccoon and possum steel fence on two sides of the 30 quadrants it owns. The hunting and trapping grounds, which by deed maintains the steel fence on the other two sides, agreed Wednesday to replace it with a nuisance wildlife steel fence. Also, the native animal habitat area will soon reapply to the hunting and trapping grounds for a steel fence around the 40 quadrants it leases from the hunting and trapping grounds. Despite this, wildlife removal services are not a free service in Clark County.

"A depredation critter trap would be a last resort," The Las Vegas exterminators declared. The protesters worry an critter trap may be too risky in a suburban area. They say snake and bat quantities estimates -- between 700 and 1,000 -- are exaggerated and believe an critter trap would wipe out the group. "They shouldn't rush to pass this ordinance," declared Robert The Las Vegas exterminating company, whose Nevada the Las Vegas exterminating company expert home abuts the proposed hunt's area. He declared the hunting and trapping grounds should commission a count of the group. He's also mattered 450 feet around buildings and roads isn't enough of a buffer and thinks insured expert trapping guys should be used rather than the retired police officers the hunting and trapping grounds proposes.

The Las Vegas exterminating company declared she respected people's rights to express their opinions, but noted "as an elected official, I have to look at the long-term solution and conserving the rat, mouse, or other rodent quantities may be part of that solution." "Wildlife in suburban and even urban communities may be becoming a challenge all over the country," she declared. "What we have to do may be be good stewards of the wildlife in our communities and that means looking at a comprehensive approach."
