Pigeons in a Building
Pigeons are commonly found in urban locations, but have adapted to almost any habitat in the planet. Pigeons have gone from primarily eating seeds and fruit to bread, french fries and any other food left by people. Pigeons are commonly found walking around on the road, and resting on rooftops. However, pigeons are able to make their way into buildings.
The best way to solve your pigeon problem is to prevent them from being able to enter in the first place. If you have a large warehouse, chances are there are large openings that provide pigeons an entry point. If you have large doors or windows, you may want to install heavy duty plastic door curtains. This allows workers to freely move in and out of the warehouse, but discourages pigeons from flying in.
If the pigeons have already made their way in, there are methods you are able to attempt to make your location less friendly and encourage them to roost somewhere else. Search for all of the flat surfaces that the pigeons may be landing on. This includes shelves and lighting fixtures. If able, make these surfaces slope, so that it is more difficult for the pigeon to land.
You may also want to install plastic spike strips. These strips are flexible and easy to install. You are able to use zip ties or an adhesive glue to attach them to surfaces. These strips make landing and roosting uncomfortable for the pigeons and will cause them to search elsewhere.
If you do not want to use the strips, there are special chemicals that make a surface sticky. This also makes it uncomfortable for pigeons to land and cause them to fly away. Reflective features, such as strips of aluminum may work, but are not a long term solution.
The most commonly dealt with bird problem in the US is that of pigeons roosting on buildings. Feral pigeons tend to live in urban areas, and they prefer to roost on and in buildings, where they leave nesting material, feathers, parasites, and
worst of all, their unsanitary and corrosive droppings. The only way to
permanently solve such problems is to install bird exclusion materials, such as bird spikes or netting. Bird trapping is also an option, but it's usually a poor and temporary
fix. In addition to pigeons, other birds can cause problems in certain other situations: woodpeckers damaging houses, sparrows stuck inside retail spaces, Chimney Swifts nesting inside chimneys, etc.
